2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
A talented and physical running back that set the NCAA single-season rushing record (427 yards) in 2014, Perine landed in an interesting spot behind Rob Kelley in the Redskins backfield. With a comparison of Michael Turner by some NFL scouts, Perine does not have the shiftiness of a Le'Veon Bell or the burst of a young Adrian Peterson, but he is a powerful runner similar to Kelley that will fit will in Jay Gruden's rushing scheme. He's the favorite to spell Kelley on early downs and has an outside shot to take over the starting role at some point during the season.

Injury Chris Thompson carted off, broken fibula
Out for the season
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 19, 8:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson broke his right fibula late in the third quarter Sunday against the Saints and was carted off the field. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Thompson was the Redskins leading rusher and receiver heading into the game. His absence will be sorely missed by a team struggling to get production from its wide receivers. Samaje Perine handled his biggest workload of the season (23 carries) and will be the feature back moving forward.

Injury Rob Kelley suffers ankle, knee injuries
High ankle aprain, MCL injury
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Nov 13, 11:43 am

Washington Redskins
Rough Sunday for #Redskins RB Rob Kelley: After tests this morning, Kelley was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain AND a grade 1/2 MCL sprain in his knee. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: This sounds like Kelley will miss some time meaning Samaje Perine should get some run on early-downs over the next few weeks. He doesn't have much of a ceiling but will be a TD-dependent RB2 moving forward.

Injury Rob Kelley a "long shot" to play
Ankle injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 11, 2:01 pm

Washington Redskins
Washington Redskins Retweeted Washington Redskins Gruden says LT Trent Williams (knee) could play this week while RB Rob Kelley (ankle) is a "long shot" to play. (Redskins on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With Kelley likely on the sidelines, Samaje Perine and Chris Thompson will handle the running back duties with Perine getting most of the early-down work. Both will have flex appeal against a 49ers defense allowing the 4th most fantasy points to running backs.

Injury Jordan Reed listed as questionable

By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 30, 1:10 pm

Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins head into Monday night’s matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs with running back Rob Kelley (rib), wide receiver Jamison Crowder (hamstring) tight end Jordan Reed (rib/sternum) as questionable. The Pro Bowl tight end is confident he can play Monday evening as he’s been regaining strength and functionality in his core. As he’s been limited in practices recently, Reed’s worked with the wide receivers during individual drills. (Redskins.com)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like both Kelley and Reed will give it a go Monday night. It would be wise for Reed owners to grab Vernon Davis off the waiver wire (if possible) in case he's a surprise inactive. Kelley should slide back into the starting role over Samaje Perine.

Injury Rob Kelley still "lead dog" when healthy
Redskins emphasize
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 26, 10:26 am

Washington Redskins
Rob Kelley is still nursing sore ribs stemming from the Week 2 win over the Rams, but when he returns, he'll be the No. 1 back. "He got [78] yards rushing in a quarter and a half last week, so he's still our No. 1 lead dog," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Kelley should practice Wednesday, albeit in a limited role. The Redskins don't play again until Monday night at Kansas City. Samaje Perine also bruised his hand in Sunday night's win over the Raiders and fumbled on the same play. For now, it appears that Kelley's status as the starter is safe. Chris Thompson saw 14 touches on Sunday, which is on the higher end of how much work they want to give him. They're well aware of his value, which is why they want to make sure he plays 16 games, Gruden said.

Injury Rob Kelley not expected to play Week 3
Rib injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 24, 7:00 am

Washington Redskins
Washington RB Rob Kelley, listed as questionable with rib injury, is not expected to play Sunday night vs Raiders, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Kelley was able to practice on a limited basis this week, but it appears he will gives his ribs another week to heal. In his absence, expect Samaje Perine to see the bulk of early-down work with Chris Thompson handling third downs. Both are flex considerations against the Raiders.

HC Gruden: We'll be "careful" with Chris Thompson
Washington RB will get more touches, but not full-time work
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 19, 10:59 am

Washington Redskins
Jay Gruden's comments on Chris Thompson: "But he's so important to us on third down we just have to be careful," he said. "He's not the biggest guy in the world. We don't want him to get 20-25 carries a game and get a lot of pounding on that body. He's definitely needed in pass protection and the routes and all that stuff on third down and red zone. So we'll try to expand his role a little bit, but we don't want to go too crazy with him." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With Rob Kelley nursing a cartilage rib injury, Thompson could see an increased workload, but won't be the full-time back -- as Samaje Perine will handle much of the standard rushing duties in early downs. Both Perine and Thompson should be owned in 12-team leagues, with Thompson the more valuable back right now, especially in PPR formats.
