2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
An early-season wrist injury cost Devontae Booker significant playing time this past season, which is disappointing because many believed that he would end up out-scoring veteran C.J. Anderson in the Denver backfield if he was given the opportunity. Despite playing in 13 games, Booker failed to reach even 300 yards on the ground and faded into relative obscurity as the season went on.

Booker is likely considered the "starter" heading into camp but don't be fooled by that. The Broncos selected Royce Freeman in the third round of the draft and there's really no question that he's the preferred option for fantasy purposes. Booker simply lacks the size, speed or strength to be an every down workhorse and despite his production in the passing game, he's not good enough there to completely keep Freeman off the field in all passing downs.

Booker is a late-round PPR option at best but he would almost certainly take over as the top back on the roster if Freeman were to go down with an injury, so there's some upside there as well.

Injury Royce Freeman not expected to play
Sprained ankle
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Nov 3, 11:30 pm

Broncos’ RB Royce Freeman, listed as questionable due to an ankle injury, is not expected to play Sunday vs. Texans, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It will be the Phillip Lindsay and Devontae Booker show once again. The Broncos have a bye in Week 10 so it makes sense for Freeman to rest this week.

Injury Royce Freeman questionable with ankle injury
Status remains uncertain
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Nov 3, 7:00 am

Denver Broncos
Running back Royce Freeman (ankle) is questionable. “In the long haul for the season, sitting him one more week may help,” Joseph said. “But we’ll see how he’s feeling (Saturday). He’s getting better really fast so if he’s ready to go, he’ll go.” (Denver Post)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like Freeman may sit this week, leaving the backfied to Phillip Lindsay and Devontae Booker but we may not know for sure until Sunday. The matchup against the Texans isn't as juicy as last week against the Chiefs but Lindsay would be a viable RB2 if Freeman sits.

Injury Royce Freeman misses practice Wednesday
Ankle injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 31, 1:00 pm

Denver Broncos
#Broncos practice (indoors/no pads): Not working were Hamilton (knee), Royce Freeman (ankle), Stewart (neck), Marshall (knee) and Roby. Veldheer (knee) back out there.

FFToday's Take: If Freeman misses Week 9, it will once again be the Phillip Lindsay and Devontae Booker show. This week, the matchup isn't as great facing a Texans defense that ranks in the middle of the pack against fantasy running backs. Lindsay out-touched Booker last week 21 to 13.

Injury Royce Freeman misses practice Thursday
Sprained ankle

#Broncos practice (not spotted or spotted/not working) Hamilton (knee) Freeman (ankle) Ray (ankle) Veldheer (knee) Peko (day off) Stewart (neck) ... Falah (concussion) out there after missing Wed. (Ryan O'Halloran on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Royce Freeman suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 7 so it's unlikely he will suit up this week. Expect Phillip Lindsey and Devontae Booker to handle the rushing duties against the Chiefs. Lindsay is a viable RB2 against a defense that's given up the 3rd most fantasy points to running backs.

Injury Royce Freeman injures ankle in Week 7
Reported high ankle sprain

FFToday's Take: This season just doesn't look like it is going to go Freeman's way. In a game in which the game script could not have been better and the rookie could have seen in upwards to 20 carries, he instead suffers an injury that will almost certainly sideline him through Denver's Week 10 bye. As a result, Phillip Lindsay should see enough of an increase in work to move into low-end RB1 territory, while Devontae Booker will likely work in a change-of-pace role.

Broncos going with "hot hand" in backfield
"Doesn't matter who starts"
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 17, 7:30 pm

Denver Broncos
Phillip Lindsay didn't start, but in on the second play and got the ball. Vance Joseph said not considering starting him: “No, because it doesn’t matter. Our deal with that room is more of game plan. It’s what they do best. It’s more of who has the hot hand that day." (Mike Klis on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Lindsay has played nine more snaps than Royce Freeman and 13 more than Devontae Booker. Lindsay is the league's third-leading rusher after two games, but one has to wonder if this is the coaching staff's way of holding out hope (or trying to get more out of) Freeman. The 190-pound Lindsay is a poor bet to hold up with a heavy workload, plus Freeman supposedly had the "hot hand" in August. It's hard to trust either player as anything more than a flex option at the moment.

Royce Freeman named Week 1 starter
Some sort of committee still expected
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 3, 6:05 pm

Denver Broncos
Vance Joseph says Royce Freeman No. 1, Devontae Booker third-down and Phillip Lindsay for a "package" of plays. (Ryan O'Halloran on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Step 1 of the Freeman Plan is now complete, but the rookie is going to have to carry over his preseason dominance into the regular season in order to eventually become the feature back in Denver. It should happen eventually, but the Broncos have been selling a committee pretty hard for a while. If Freeman shows well - Seattle should be accommodating in Week 1 - then he could easily live up to his fourth-round ADP. Just don't expect it to happen right away.
