2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
The Ty Montgomery experiment had some high moments (Weeks 1 and 2) but mostly gets an incomplete for the season. With 18 receptions over the first three weeks it was abundantly clear Montgomery retained the ability to catch the ball after his transition from receiver. He even found the endzone twice, but from Week 4 on injuries to himself and his quarterback killed any fantasy value he may have had. Montgomery's biggest knock is his ability to prove he could handle the rigors of a starting running back, and that question mark certainly remains, as he missed a total of 11 games over the last two seasons. It looks like he's spent the offseason in Green Bay trying to build his body, but with both Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones back, and proving they have the talent to produce in the NFL, Montgomery finds himself smack dab in the middle of a muddled backfield. It's tough to gauge how this backfield shakes out, but it's clear Montgomery's best usage will come as a chess piece the Packers can move around. They are fully committed to this experiment, and if he can stay healthy he should catch 40+ passes, and his best returns should come as a strong FLEX play in PPR leagues, or in the RB3 area in standard leagues.

Aaron Jones to have "secondary role" on Sunday
Green Bay RB returns from suspension
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 19, 12:15 pm

Green Bay Packers
McCarthy on #Packers backfield with Aaron Jones returning: "Jamaal and Ty have played good football. I know what Aaron gives us, but his role will be secondary. Jamaal and Ty will be in the first slot." (Ryan Wood on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Jones returns from suspension this week, but it sounds like Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery will keep their places on the depth chart. Jones remains a hold in fantasy leagues and can't be trusted in Week 3.

Injury Montgomery's foot injury: nothing serious
Packer's RB leaves third pre-season game early
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 25, 7:00 am

Green Bay Packers
Last night, #Packers RB Ty Montgomery left early with a foot injury. But post-game, coach Mike McCarthy said, “I'm told it's nothing of a serious nature." (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Montgomery left the Packers third pre-season game with an apparent foot injury and never. He'll likely be held out the final pre-season game in preparation for Week 1 where he'll share snaps with Jamaal Williams. Aaron Jones will serve a two-game suspension to start the season.

Injury Aaron Jones misses practice with hamstring issue
No timeline for return
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Jul 30, 11:00 am

Green Bay Packers
Coach Mike McCarthy doesn’t have a timeline for when Aaron Jones will return from what the team is only classifying as "hamstring tightness," but he said the second-year running back wouldn't practice Monday. Jones missed Saturday’s practice - the first day in pads during camp - with a hamstring injury. (Green Bay Press Gazette)

FFToday's Take: The hamstring injury may or may not be a significant injury but Jones is missing valuable practice early in camp. Jones is scheduled to miss the first two games of the season due to suspension. Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery figure to get the bulk of work in those early games.

RB Aaron Jones gets 2-game suspension
Violation of the substance abuse policy
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jul 3, 3:00 pm

Green Bay Packers
Suspensions galore today. Two games for Packers RB Aaron Jones, league announces. Violation of the substance abuse policy. (Mike Garafolo on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Jones was arrested last November on a traffic violation in which he admitted to smoking marijuana. His suspension will give Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams a chance to solidify their spot in the Packers' running back by committee approach. Jones' eighth round ADP will certainly take a hit.

Aaron Jones bulked up during offseason
Seeking improved durability, better anchor in pass protection
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 2, 4:45 pm

Green Bay Packers
A review of his rookie season revealed Aaron Jones needed to further develop the lower half of his body to stand up to the wear-and-tear of an NFL season and improve his skills in pass protection. “I’m bigger all around,” Jones said. “That’s something that’s going to help me in pass protection and that’s something I want to get better at.” While Jones is thicker in his lower body, neither he nor position coach Ben Sirmans feel the 5-foot-9, 208-pound running back has lost any of the explosiveness that allowed Jones to average 5.5 yards per carry on 81 attempts last season. (Packers.com)

FFToday's Take: Ty Montgomery figures to be involved in some way, shape or form in the passing game, so Jones and Jamaal Williams figure to slug it out for the bulk of the early-down work. If Jones' offseason strategy pays off and allows him to stay healthier as well as serve as a more effective blocker, he will almost certainly be the favorite to lead the team in carries. He seems like a solid value pick in the eighth round of PPR leagues right now.
