2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
The sophomore season for running back Jay Ajayi was one of the more bizarre storylines of the 2016 season, with the Dolphins doing everything in their power to not play the former Boise State Bronco. The Miami front office tried unsuccessfully to bring in C.J. Anderson from Denver, and then settled on an aging Arian Foster to start the season. Instead of using Ajayi as a backup in Week 1 against the Seahawks, the Dolphins front office deactivated the second-year player, citing attitude issues as the reason for the move.

A career-ending injury to Foster forced the staff to give Ajayi the start Week 5 against the Titans. Although the former fifth round pick struggled with only 42 yards on 13 carries, he did manage to find the end zone and post double-digit fantasy points. Ajayi would then follow with consecutive 200-yard performances against Pittsburgh and Buffalo, before posting 111 yards and a touchdown at home against the Jets Week 9.

Ajayi enters 2017 as the clear lead back for an offense that finished 2016 as the 9th best rushing attack in the league. He is a lock for 250 carries, assuming that he can stay healthy and does not lose the favor of the coaching staff. The health of center Mike Pouncey and the Dolphins offensive line is critical to the success of the rushing game - all but one of Ajayi's big games occurred when the O-line was active.

On a negative note, Ajayi's fantasy production was not consistent in 2016, with 57% of his yardage coming in a quarter of his games. Although he delivered two 27-point performances and a whopping 32.7 points against the Steelers Week 6, he failed to post double-digit fantasy points in nine of his 16 games.

Jay Ajayi dealing with knee soreness
HC: "Not a big issue"
By: Doug Orth | Thu Sep 14, 5:30 pm

Miami Dolphins
Jay Ajayi has had some knee soreness for a while. Not a big issue per Adam Gase. (Palm Beach Post - Joe Schad)

FFToday's Take: Ajayi is practicing in full and expected to carry the Dolphins' running game in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers. This news is just a reminder that Miami's workhorse is an injury risk and dropped in the 2015 draft because of concerns over his knee. The Dolphins very much want Kenyan Drake to be the primary backup, but he has his own durability issues. With that said, he's probably the most likely handcuff for Ajayi owners.

Bucs-Dolphins rescheduled for Week 11
Both teams share a bye Week 11
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 6, 8:30 am

Miami Dolphins
The NFL officially postponed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Miami Dolphins tilt until Week 11. With Hurricane Irma gaining steam as it moves toward South Florida, the league announced the matchup will be moved from Sunday to Sunday, Nov. 19. Both the Bucs and Dolphins had a bye in Week 11. The news means that Miami and Tampa will play 16 straight games to close out the season. (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: Mother nature wins again. Moving the game to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia was discussed but in the end, fantasy owners of Jay Cutler, Jay Ajayi, Jameis Winston, Mike Evans, etc need to find other options.

Injury Ajayi being evaluated for a concussion
Left practice Monday
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Jul 31, 12:59 pm

Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins believed they were set at running back until this morning. They figured Jay Ajayi was going to be the bell cow back and they’d get the football in his hands 400 or so times this year while Kenyan Drake and Damien Williams provided some outstanding depth. Well, it happened Monday. Ajayi is being evaluated for a concussion. (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: Ajayi left practice Monday after "getting his bell rung". There's no reason for fantasy owners to panic now until we hear something official from the team.

Jay Ajayi a good bet to push 1,900 total yards?
ESPN writer optimistic about Miami RB
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jun 26, 4:40 pm

Miami Dolphins
Jay Ajayi has more confidence and swagger that he can carry the load. Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said he won't be afraid to give Ajayi 350 carries if needed this season. Ajayi also has worked diligently on catching the football out of the backfield, which to date is his biggest weakness. Ajayi should have a monster year and could put up 1,900 total yards if he stays healthy, according to ESPN's James Walker. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Ajayi has a lot of what owners want from a RB1 - talent, no obvious threat to a heavy workload, solid supporting cast among them - and received plenty of praise this offseason about his improvement in the passing game. If Ajayi can finish with over 40 receptions and maintains the workload he had from Week 6 on last season (20.8 carries per game), Walker may not be far off with his projection. Consider him a solid RB1 and worthy first-round pick in all leagues.
