2015 Outlook
Depth Chart
Rumors of Peyton Manning’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. The future first ballot Hall of Famer took a big step back in 2014, throwing for 750 fewer yards and 16 fewer touchdowns with five more interceptions than he threw in 2013. Sounds terribly disappointing on the surface, doesn’t it? Well, despite the drop-off, Manning still finished as the No. 4 quarterback in fantasy football with 39 touchdowns and over 4,700 yards through the air. If you knew you were getting those numbers again in 2015, it’d be almost impossible to turn down Manning as a first round fantasy football selection. But Manning, despite his incredible consistency, does not have the sexy name value anymore like that of Andrew Luck and Aaron Rodgers. He may not even be as exciting as Russell Wilson now that the Seattle QB has Jimmy Graham to throw to. But one thing’s for certain – Peyton Manning is still Peyton Manning. And when it comes to elite fantasy football production, literally no one in the history of the league has done it better than No. 18.

In fairness, the 39 year-old saw significant regression in the second half of 2014 as he had a couple of very disappointing games where he threw for fewer than 200 yards and he even failed to throw a touchdown in two games, which is an extreme rarity for the veteran signal caller. Still, if you take Manning’s second half of 2014 and project it over the course of a full season, you would have a quarterback who threw for more than 4,300 yards and 30 touchdowns. That would put him 8th among quarterbacks in yardage and tied with his brother Eli at ninth place in touchdowns. Not too shabby for a guy who was noticeably injured. One of the biggest concerns for Manning is the loss of tight end Julius Thomas. The Broncos seem to be excited about the development of second-year receiver Cody Latimer who should see much more playing time this season and Emmanuel Sanders will most likely play out of the slot on three-wide sets, where he was extremely effective this past season. The loss of Thomas could be a major factor, however, as Thomas was among the most dynamic playmakers at the position over the past two seasons. Veteran pass catcher Owen Daniels is expected to take Thomas’ spot at tight end and he should be able to provide some value, but he is an obvious downgrade in terms playmaking ability.

Still, Manning is among the elite at quarterback. With so many questions surrounding other top quarterbacks after the “big two,” Manning provides an extremely high floor with a high ceiling to go along with it. Sure, he’s not going to be the dynamic runner that many other top quarterbacks are, but he should put up high-end passing numbers with the best of them. Because of that, he is a lock to go in the top five at the position in almost every draft.

Peyton Manning will need hip surgery in future
Nothing imminent as Peyton downplays his latest health concerns
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Feb 3, 5:55 pm

Denver Broncos
On Wednesday, Peyton Manning revealed that he eventually needs to undergo hip replacement surgery, according to a doctor who was kind enough to break the news to the aging quarterback. (CBSSports.com)

FFToday's Take: Peyton Manning downplayed this report by deeming it something he will need to do at "age 52" but the fact remains that he will be another year older and his body is clearly wearing down. Nonetheless, there are certainly going to be NFL teams interested in him if he is physically able to play the position in 2016.

Peyton has told friends he intends to retire
Has yet to tip his hand publicly, however
By: Doug Orth | Mon Feb 1, 7:40 pm

Denver Broncos
In a not-so-private moment, Broncos QB Peyton Manning told Patriots HC Bill Belichick that 2015 may be Peyton’s last rodeo. In much more private moments, Manning reportedly has been more definitive. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Manning has told close friends that he’ll retire after Super Bowl 50. (Pro Football Talk)

FFToday's Take: This doesn't qualify as breaking news, but rather another reminder that one of the all-time greats will probably be playing his last game on Sunday. The 18-year veteran will turn 40 next month and his body appears to be breaking down after an injury-plagued season in 2016. Win or lose in Super Bowl 50, it will likely mark the end of the road for the five-time NFL MVP. As such, one of Denver's top offseason priorities will likely be locking up Brock Osweiler long-term.

Broncos announce Peyton Manning will start
Divisional Round QB goes to the veteran
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Jan 7, 10:15 am

Denver Broncos
The decision has been made: Peyton Manning will start at quarterback for the Broncos in their divisional-round game on Jan. 17. Head Coach Gary Kubiak told the team at its Thursday morning meeting that Manning would start. Kubiak met with Manning and Brock Osweiler prior to announcing the decision. (DenverBroncos.com)

FFToday's Take: When Manning relieved Osweiler in Week 17, you had to figure Manning would be the starter in the playoffs. Manning has recovered enough from his torn plantar fascia to get back on the field but concerns over arm strength and his poor play (9 TDS, 17 INTs) remain a big question mark. The Broncos will face either Houston, Kansas City or Pittsburgh in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

Injury Peyton Manning returns to practice field
Threw inside for half hour and performed drill work
By: Doug Orth | Thu Dec 10, 7:00 am

Denver Broncos
Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning took his first significant steps toward returning to the practice field Wednesday morning, throwing inside for a half hour and performing drill work. Manning hasn't practiced with the team since leaving the Nov. 15 loss against Kansas City with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot. (Denver Post)

FFToday's Take: There's no definitive timetable for Manning's return and it appears that Brock Osweiler's starting job is safe for the immediate future. It's doubtful Manning would return before the regular season is complete.

Injury Peyton Manning has cast removed
Still in walking boot
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Dec 2, 5:00 pm

Denver Broncos
Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said Wednesday that the cast came off, but the quarterback is still in a boot as he recovers from a plantar fascia injury. The cast removal means Peyton Manning can now start rehabbing, but the quarterback said on Wednesday that he is week-to-week. (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: If you haven't already moved on from Peyton Manning (plantar fascia), you should consider using the roster spot on someone else. If and when he does return this season, he will be tough for Denver HC Gary Kubiak to push Brock Osweiler back to the sidelines after the success he has had since taking over as the team's starting quarterback. Osweiler doesn't bring a ton of fantasy upside but he could be a useful matchup option down the stretch in deeper leagues.

Injury Peyton not expected to be healthy "anytime soon"
Denver QB debate may not be addressed for several weeks
By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 30, 5:55 pm

Denver Broncos
Per @mortreport, Peyton Manning not expected to be healthy “anytime soon.” Maybe a month from a real Manning-Osweiler decision. (Kevin Seifert on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Earlier reports on Monday suggested Manning will be allowed to remove his walking boot before the end of the week, so it would seem he could be back by Week 14 in an emergency situation. With that said, it is quickly looking as if Brock Osweiler is simply a better fit for HC Gary Kubiak's offense than Manning. Denver has rushed for at least 170 yards in each of Osweiler's first two starts after averaging 86 over its first nine games.

Brock Osweiler to make second straight start
On the QB1 radar against New England
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Nov 23, 1:30 pm

Denver Broncos
Brock Osweiler will make another start for the Broncos against the Patriots on Sunday night, per team sources. (Chris Morensen on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Osweiler was solid in the Broncos win at Chicago tossing two touchdowns while throwing for 250 yards and zero INTs. There's some uncertainty as to whether Peyton Manning will remain on the bench because he's injured and unable to play or because the Broncos are looking to move on at the position. The answer likely lies somewhere between. Osweiler will be on the QB1 radar at home against the Patriots in Week 12.

Injury Osweiler preparing for first career start
Manning on 'treatment only' program
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Nov 18, 8:00 pm

Denver Broncos
“I’ve prepared for this moment for a very long time,’’ Osweiler said after practice Wednesday. “I haven’t wasted a single day, I’m just going to stick to the preparation that got me to this point and I’ll be ready to go on Sunday.’’ Peyton Manning has made every start since signing with the Broncos, right up until Sunday’s game. Having dealt with right shoulder, left foot and rib cage injuries of late the Broncos have put Manning on a treatment-only program -- no practice, no games -- for at least the near future. (ESPN.com)

FFToday's Take: Brock Osweiler's first pro start comes against a Bears squad that employs former Broncos HC John Fox. Familiarity aside Chicago is only yielding 217 yards per game through the air and has given up the sixth most passing touchdowns (17) in the league. Osweiler sits just outside the top 10-12 fantasy QBs this week but carries plenty of appeal for dynasty leaguers.

Injury Peyton Manning ruled out for Week 11
Brock Osweiler will draw start against Chicago
By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 16, 4:30 pm

Denver Broncos
Peyton Manning will not face former Denver head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase when the Broncos travel to Chicago to take on the Bears on Sunday. Coach Gary Kubiak announced Monday that Brock Osweiler will start in Week 11, as Manning has been ruled out. "That decision has been made," said Kubiak, who added that Manning expressed a desire to play through his nagging injury, which NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported is a case of plantar fasciitis. Trevor Siemian will back up Osweiler until at least next Monday when Kubiak will check back in with Manning. (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: Kubiak expressed regret Monday for not holding Manning out of Week 10 altogether after his 39-year-old quarterback suffered a ribcage injury at some point late last week. If Osweiler shows he can move the offense consistently over the next week and maybe two, Kubiak may feel as if he has no choice but to stay with him. With his 9:17 touchdown-to-interception ratio, Manning is the only quarterback in the league that has started every game and has a negative TD-to-INT ratio.

Injury Peyton Manning has plantar fasciitis in left foot
Brock Osweiler replaced Manning in Week 10
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Nov 16, 11:30 am

Denver Broncos
Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has plantar fasciitis in his foot, including a partial tear of tissue, an NFL source confirmed Monday. Manning began experiencing pain two weeks ago, then aggravated the injury on the artifical turf at Lucas Oil Stadium eight days ago. He completed 5-of -20 passes for 35 yards and 4 INTS on Sunday against the Chiefs. He is worst in the NFL with 17 interceptions, leaving him on pace for a career-high 30. (Denver Post)

FFToday's Take: Nothing is official but you can expect Brock Osweiler to be under center for the Broncos in Week 11 against the Bears as rest is the best cure for Manning's foot injury. Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas are performing more like low-end WR2s than WR1s through ten weeks of the season.

Injury Peyton Manning "limited" on Thursday
Foot injury
By: Doug Orth | Thu Nov 12, 5:25 pm

Denver Broncos
Peyton Manning officially listed as "limited." HC Gary Kubiak: "There's concern, but I think he'll get there." (Nicki Jhabvala on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Manning did not practice on Wednesday and it is interesting to note that Kubiak expressed concern. With that said, there doesn't seem to be overwhelming concern, so feel free to play Manning, Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders as you normally would.

Injury Peyton Manning rests sore foot Wednesday
Kubiak says Peyton will practice Thursday
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Nov 11, 7:03 pm

Denver Broncos
Coach Gary Kubiak told reporters that Peyton Manning sat out Wednesday's practice because of a sore foot that has bothered the 39-year-old quarterback for a "couple weeks," per NFL Media's James Palmer. Kubiak said that Manning came out of Sunday's defeat "really sore" after playing on the FieldTurf at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Broncos expect him to return to practice on Thursday. (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: This looks like a simple day of rest for an aging veteran who has struggled at times during the first half of the season. Peyton Manning's sore foot isn't going to prevent him from playing this week but it may help explain his lack of touchdown passes in recent weeks. Manning and the Broncos' passing attack have only notched four TD receptions in their last five games.
