2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
After missing the 2016 season with an Achilles tendon injury, most believe that it's Branden Oliver who has the inside track to be the primary backup for Melvin Gordon heading into the 2017 season. Oliver has drawn praise from quarterback Philip Rivers who raved about his explosiveness in OTA's, noting that it's great to have two backs (Gordon and Oliver) who have similar skill sets and can do many of the same things.

Oliver has performed relatively well when he's been given the chance, particularly in 2014 when he had back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances. Oliver himself is unlikely to have much fantasy value while Gordon is healthy however it's the nature of being an NFL running back that injuries are always just a play away. Oliver is the most tenured of the backs on the Los Angeles roster despite being just 26 years old. While the team did have a turnover at many of the coaching positions, Ken Whisenhunt will remain the team's offensive coordinator heading into 2017, which should mean that Oliver has a good grasp of the playbook. He certainly hasn't locked up the backup running back job, but his skill set seems to be closest to that of Gordon, which would seem to indicate that he'd be the player who would transition most smoothly into a starting role should Gordon go down this season.

Injury Melvin Gordon expected to play
Sprained ankle
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Dec 30, 11:00 pm

Chargers' RB Melvin Gordon, listed as questionable for Sunday’s game vs Raiders due to ankle injury, will play, per league source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Gordon is dealing with a sprained ankle and how much he will play or how effective he will be remains a big question mark. The Chargers called up RB Russell Hansbrough from the practice squad. Branden Oliver will backup Gordon. It will be difficult to trust and the Chargers RBs in Week 17.

Injury Melvin Gordon questionable for Week 17
Ankle injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 25, 8:15 pm

Chargers HC Anthony Lynn said RB Melvin Gordon's left foot is in a boot after suffering an ankle injury late in the game against the New York Jets. Lynn said Gordon could be a game-time decision on Sunday in the team's regular-season finale against the Oakland Raiders. "He's seeing the doctors tomorrow [Tuesday], and we'll know more about Melvin as we get going here," Lynn said. "Ankles can be kind of tricky. We can keep him out all week, and he's had enough reps where he can go out and play. He knows what he's doing, and that's something that we'll look at. But he's another guy that's probably going to come down to the end of the week." (ESPN - Eric D. Williams)

FFToday's Take: Gordon handled 22 touches in the Week 16 win over the New York Jets. After consecutive injury-shortened seasons to begin his career, the third-year back would probably like nothing more than to silence critics about his lack of durability and send his team to the postseason for the first time since 2013. If he cannot go, Branden Oliver would likely become the every-down back with Austin Ekeler also battling an injury. Oliver would be difficult to start outside the deepest of leagues.
