2017 Outlook

Thielen was such a darkhorse that I didn't even feature him in this column last year. Prior to a breakout 2016, Thielen had combined for just 20 catches over his first two years. But injuries to Diggs and Treadwell forced Thielen into a primary pass catching role, and he came up huge with a 69-967-5 line over the course of the season. Stepping up when his team needed him the most earned him a nice new contract and a chance to again be a major contributor in the passing game. The problem is that Thielen offers much more value to the Vikings than he does in fantasy. He's unlikely to reach or surpass his 2016 numbers, as the entire offense should function more efficiently, meaning Thielen won't be relied upon as much. He had a few monster games last season, and he won't be sneaking up on defenses anymore. If everyone stays healthy, Thielen falls back into WR4/5 territory and becomes much more of a complementary player.

Injury Stefon Diggs ruled out
Case Keenum will start
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 20, 2:10 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer confirmed in his Friday afternoon press conference that Case Keenum will start at quarterback on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs (groin), quarterback Sam Bradford (knee), guard Nick Easton (calf) have all been ruled out on Sunday after not participating in practice this week. (Vikings.com)

FFToday's Take: Diggs missed Week 6 with a groin injury and will miss Week 7 as well. In his place Adam Thielen will be the main target for Keenum against the Ravens on Sunday. Kyle Rudolph is also a good option for TE streamers.

Injury No practice again for Stefon Diggs
Has missed last five practices with groin injury

Vikings listed Stefon Diggs as DNP again. (USA Today)

FFToday's Take: Diggs was in uniform Thursday but did not do much, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Owners should prepare to be without him again in Week 7. Since the Vikings' bye comes in Week 9, they could sit him next week as well. Throughout his two-plus year NFL career, Diggs has been significantly better in games in which he managed to avoid getting listed on the injury report, so keep that in mind moving forward. Adam Thielen should once again be a target hog in Week 7.

Injury No Bradford, no Diggs on Friday
Case Keenum expected to start
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 13, 1:05 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Andrew Sendejo returned to practice today for #Vikings. No Sam Bradford, Stefon Diggs or Easton again. (Andrew Krammer on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Expect Case Keenum to get the start against the Packers in Week 6. Diggs noted earlier in the week that he expects to play but missing practice all week suggests he's a candidate for the inactive list. If he is active, he'll be a risky play for fantasy owners. Adam Thielen should be the most targeted receiver for the Vikings this week.

Michael Floyd to return to practice Thursday
Vikings receiver coming off four-game suspension
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Oct 4, 6:00 am

Minnesota Vikings
Just as Minnesota lost a key part of its offense when Dalvin Cook went down with a season-ending ACL tear, it added another with the return of Michael Floyd. The wide receiver, who sat out the first four games of the season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, returned from his suspension Monday and will be back at practice Thursday. (ESPPN.com)

FFToday's Take: Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen have been extremely productive over the first month of the season so Michael Floyd's fantasy upside will be limited as he battles for targets within the offense.

Injury Sam Bradford out for Week 2
Case Keenum will start

FFToday's Take: With Bradford out Case Keenum will get start. Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen get downgrades on this news along with the offense as a whole.

Adam Thielen seeing more time in the slot
Stefon Diggs served as primary inside option in 2016
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 24, 5:40 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Adam Thielen has spent more time in the slot in the Vikings’ three-receiver formations heading into this season. That has moved receiver Stefon Diggs into more of an outside role after he was the primary slot receiver last season. “(Thielen) has been playing a little bit more in the slot, so just trying to develop that chemistry with some of those routes on the inside,” quarterback Sam Braford said. “It’s a little bit different in there, coverages are a little bit different, especially in zone coverage. It’s kind of finding voids, finding openings and having a feel for how to get open.” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)

FFToday's Take: Bradford had a 122.9 quarterback rating last season when targeting Thielen, who gives the team a bit more size and physicality at 6-2, 200 pounds than Diggs (6-0, 191). This does add to the appeal of Thielen, although this sounds much more like the Vikings giving themselves flexibility as opposed to a full-time commitment. Thielen is a solid WR4 choice with top 30-35 upside at his position if he remains as efficient as he was in 2016.
