2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
An A/C joint sprain forced Hogan to play in only nine games in the 2017 regular season. In those nine games, Hogan was a valuable fantasy asset, catching 34 passes for 439 yards and five touchdowns. From weeks two through five, Hogan delivered four consecutive double-digit performances, including a two-touchdown game against Houston Week 3.

Injuries are always a concern for Hogan, a six-year veteran who has yet to play a full 16-game season as a member of the Patriots. It should also be noted that although Hogan was a stud for the first quarter of 2017, he has never caught more than 41 passes or five touchdowns in a season.

The departure of Brandin Cooks to Los Angeles and the four-game suspension of Julian Edelman opens the door for Hogan to once again be a difference-making WR in the first quarter of the season. The question will be how long can Hogan last before succumbing to another injury, and will this finally be the season in which Tom Brady comes down to Earth.

Eric Decker announces retirement
Revolving door continues for New England WRs
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Aug 26, 1:00 pm

New England Patriots
Veteran wide receiver Eric Decker, who had signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots on Aug. 3, announced his retirement on Instagram Sunday afternoon. Decker appeared to be on the roster bubble despite the Patriots' needs at receiver; he didn't play in the first half of Friday's preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: The wide receiver group in New England has been a revolving door as the Patriots have said goodbye to Jordan Matthews, Malcolm Mitchell and Kenny Britt earlier this off-season. With Decker headed toward retirement, Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett and Cordarrelle Patterson remain the top four options with Edelman severing a four-game suspension.

Patriots release WR Malcolm Mitchell
Knee still an issue

New England Patriots
Patriots have released WR Malcolm Mitchell. Really flashed as a rookie but has battled injury problems (Jason La Canfora on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Mitchell played 12 games in his rookie season but has battled knee issues ever since. The Patriots attempted to trade the third-year wide receiver but couldn't get a deal done. The wide receiver depth chart is still in flux with Chris Hogan, Julian Edelman, Kenny Britt, Eric Decker, Cordarrelle Patterson and Phillip Dorsett all vying for targets.

Patriots sign Eric Decker
One-year deal
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 2, 11:25 am

New England Patriots
Patriots expected to sign former Titans’, Jets’ and Broncos’ WR Eric Decker to a one-year deal, per sources. And it’s neither here nor there, but is there now a better looking QB-WR combo in the NFL than Tom Brady and Decker? (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Jordan Matthews suffered a hamstring injury in last Sunday's practice and the Patriots felt the need to bring in another wideout into a crowded group. Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson, Eric Decker, Kenny Britt and Malcolm Mitchell fill up the top of the depth chart. He's a late-round dart throw in redraft leagues.

Injury Patriots release Jordan Matthews
Suffered significant hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Aug 1, 1:00 pm

New England Patriots
According to a league source, the #Patriots have released WR Jordan Matthews. He had suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s practice. (Jim McBride on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Reports surfaced that Matthews had suffered a significant hamstring injury and would likely miss most of training camp. The Patriots ultimately decided to cut the wide receiver who was working in a rotation opposite Chris Hogan. With Matthews released and Julian Edelman scheduled to miss the first 4 games of the season, the door is open for Kenny Britt, Malcolm Mitchell and Phillip Dorsett to earn more opportunities.
