2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
The main receiving back in the New England passing game, White finished 2016 with 60 catches for 551 yards and five touchdowns. His role appears to be clearly defined heading into 2017, but as is always the case with Bill Belichick teams, expecting a certain amount of volume for a running back is an exercise in futility.

White's extensive usage in the Super Bowl is often cited as a reason to think he may see more action in the 2017 regular season. But that narrative is flawed due to the fact that the Patriots were down for most of the game and an injury to Dion Lewis gave White exclusive work in the backfield on passing downs. White is more of a target in PPR leagues and can typically be had early in Round 10.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Burkhead, Gillislee not expected to play
Both were limited in practice this week
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jan 13, 9:30 am

New England Patriots
Patriots’ RBs Rex Burkhead (knee) and Mike Gillislee (knee), both listed as questionable for tonight’s Divisional Playoff game against the Titans, are not expected to play, per league sources. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Burkhead and Gillislee got in limited practices this week and both are listed as questionable. In their absence, expect Dion Lewis and James White (ankle) to handle the majority of work at the running back position with Lewis being the featured back as he has been the last few weeks.

Injury Burkhead limited on Wednesday
Said to be favoring his left knee
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jan 10, 3:10 pm

New England Patriots
Running back Rex Burkhead, who returned to practice last week on a limited basis, is still heavily favoring his injured left knee. Burkhead missed the final two games of the regular season after suffering the injury against the Steelers. If he is available Saturday against the Titans, it appears he’ll be limited, barring a rapid turnaround in the coming days. (Boston Herald)

FFToday's Take: In addition to Burkhead, Mike Gillislee is also battling a knee injury. He missed practice on Wednesday. It appears Dion Lewis is on track to getting the start in the Patriots backfield. James White (ankle) was also limited in practice Wednesday but he is expected to play.

Injury Hogan, White expected to sit for Patriots
Patriots playing to win, but will rest injured players
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 31, 8:10 am

New England Patriots
The #Patriots are playing to win today, but they'll rest players who are borderline with injuries. That includes WR Chris Hogan (shoulder), source said. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Adam Schefter is also reporting that James White is expected to sit meaning we should see a lot of Dion Lewis out of the backfield. Top receiving options for Brady include Brandin Cooks, Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola.

Injury Hogan, White expected to sit for Patriots
New England down two key offensive players
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 24, 7:00 am

New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are expected to be without running back James White and receiver Chris Hogan for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. White will sit out with an ankle injury, while Hogan is dealing with a hurt shoulder. Both players practiced all week and were listed as questionable. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With White out of the running back mix, it will allow Mike Gillislee to be active for the first time since Week 8. Expect Dion Lewis and Gillislee to handle the majority of touches out of the backfield. Danny Amendola and Brandin Cooks should see an uptick in targets with Hogan out.

Injury Rex Burkhead expected back for playoffs
Patriots looking to roll with Dion Lewis & James White in Week 16
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Mon Dec 18, 12:20 pm

New England Patriots
Ian Rapoport on Twitter: "#Patriots RB Rex Burkhead was diagnosed with just a knee sprain after his MRI, source said. The team is optimistic their versatile weapon will be back for the playoffs. Good news, especially considering what it originally looked like." (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Dion Lewis should remain in place as the lead back, but we'll likely see more of James White -- and perhaps even some Mike Gillislee, until we reach the playoffs.

Injury Sprained knee for Burkhead? MRI today
Should be back for the playoffs
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Dec 18, 9:00 am

New England Patriots
Heading into the MRI, the #Patriots believe RB Rex Burkhead suffered a sprained knee, along with a bruise from a player landing on it. No torn ACL. The early hope is for a return for the playoffs. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Patriots lost one of their cogs in the running back group yesterday. It sounds like Burkhead avoided a season-ending injury but an MRI is coming today. Dion Lewis, James White and Mike Gillislee will handle running back duties during the final two weeks of the regular season.
