2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
Former No.4 overall NFL Draft pick Sammy Watkins is now joining his third team his young career, which usually indicates that the player is not living up to expectations. Watkins has failed to reach 1,000 receiving yards in three of his first four NFL seasons and he's actually been below 600 yards in each of his past two seasons. But at just 25 years old, Watkins is still extremely young and has plenty of time to learn. In fact, he's only about 18 months older than Calvin Ridley, who was drafted this offseason by the Falcons. Needless to say, there's still a lot of upside for Watkins and the Chiefs invested heavily in him because they believe in his talent.

Watkins figures to take over much of the role vacated by Albert Wilson who left for Miami this offseason. Wilson was targeted just 62 times this past season, but Watkins is substantially more talented and the Chiefs have put a ton of money into him for a reason. At 6'1" versus Wilson's 5'9" height, Watkins is a larger physical presence on the field. There have been times, where Watkins has made tremendous plays that normal receivers simply cannot make, but the lack of consistency has been difficult to deal with for both fantasy owners and the two previous NFL franchises he's been a part of in Los Angeles and Buffalo.

While his stint in LA was short-lived, Watkins quietly led the Rams in receiving touchdowns with eight this past season, scoring a touchdown on more than one in every five passes he caught. That type of pace is completely unsustainable but it does demonstrate Watkins' ability to make plays in the red zone, which will be important given Tyreek Hill's lack of history doing so.

For Watkins, it's a new system in Kansas City with a young quarterback who he has no rapport with. He'll get an entire offseason to prepare with Mahomes - something he didn't have the benefit of when he was traded to the Rams late in the 2017 preseason - but it's still tough to believe that Watkins is going to take the step forward into being an every week fantasy option as long as Hill, Kelce and Hunt are healthy. Watkins fits best ball formats in a major way but with fewer than 100 targets likely to come his way, he'll most likely be hit-or-miss for most of the season and that could be frustrating to deal with from a season-long standpoint.

Watkins, Mahomes "starting to sync"
KC not disappointed in WR despite catch-less preseason so far
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 23, 5:15 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
HC Andy Reid said he loves Sammy Watkins’ “intensity on learning all the little, small things” and has seen that translate into good things at practice. OC Eric Bieniemy had a similar take and said that he’s seen signs that Watkins and Patrick Mahomes are striking up a strong relationship. “When it’s all said and done, Sammy is doing a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said, via ESPN.com. “He’s doing a great job. He’s accepted the challenge because we’re not just playing him at one position. He’s accepted the challenge of learning all three across the board. ... (Mahomes and Watkins') communication, their rhythm is starting to sync.” (Pro Football Talk - Josh Alper)

FFToday's Take: Watkins has fallen a bit out of favor in fantasy circles due to a perceived lack of love in the Kansas City offense, but his contract (three years, $48 million) suggests he will be plenty involved when September rolls around. As long as he can stay healthy - never a certainty with him - he should be able to deliver high-end WR3 value.

Sammy Watkins working "all over the place"
Free-agent acquisition getting force-fed offense and doing well
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jun 28, 5:25 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs have been, to some extent, caught off guard by how badly Sammy Watkins wants success, how much he wants to make good on his contract, how much he wants to be another strong receiving option. They're asking him to learn all of their wide receiving positions, and he hasn't flinched. "We're moving him all over the place, and he's handled it," coach Andy Reid said. "We've overloaded him with that. That's how we do it in this offense. That's something new for him. You can tell he's a guy that takes it away from here and studies." (ESPN - Adam Teicher)

FFToday's Take: Watkins' ADP in PPR formats is slowly creeping up into the sixth-round range, lessening the insane value he was just a week or so ago. Nevertheless, the ability to move around and play X, Y and Z as opposed to the standard X he has played for most of his career can only be a good thing for him, especially with Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce soaking up so much defensive attention. Watkins should be a rock-solid WR3 with WR2 upside in fantasy this season.
