2014 Outlook

As one of the most polarizing players in the NFL, Johnny Manziel provides a similarly tantalizing dilemma for fantasy owners. He has undeniable physical gifts, but does he have enough between the ears to win the starting job and run with it? A dynamo on the ground and in the air, Johnny Football dazzled the college ranks for two years at Texas A&M. He showed improved development as a pocket passer in his short collegiate career, but enters a pro system that will undoubtedly test his discipline and maturity.

A positive for Manziel is the presence of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan knows a little something about getting the most out of fleet-footed rookie quarterbacks. Expect Shanahan to employ Manziel on a bevy of rollouts and bootlegs to give him the throw/run option. No matter who is under center, the Browns will use a running-based offense, especially considering the potential loss of All-Pro receiver Josh Gordon. Manziel will be a part of that attack and with enough playing time, he could approach 100 carries. Any potential fantasy impact that Manziel might have will be tied to playing time. If he can win the job in camp, he should start all 16 games. Manziel's cocky attitude, reckless play style and sinewy rocket arm harken back to a young Brett Favre. In his first year as a starter for the Packers, Favre put up 3,000+ yards passing and had a respectable 18-14 touchdown to interception ratio. With a limited offense, experience and weapons to throw to, Manziel's full-season stats are most likely capped at QB2 potential. Keep a close eye on his development, as Manziel could be a valuable spot starter late in the season for a needy fantasy owner.

Browns hire John DeFilippo as OC
Former Raiders QB coach headed to Cleveland
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jan 21, 10:45 am

Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have decided on Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo to be their new offensive coordinator, Northeast Ohio Media Group has confirmed. DeFilippo, a rising young offensive star in the NFL at the age of 36, worked with Mike Pettine in 2009 when both were with the New York Jets. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

FFToday's Take: DeFilippo got an interview for the same position last season before Cleveland decided to go with Kyle Shanahan. This will be DeFilippo's first job as OC and will have a challenge on his hands dealing with the Johnny Manziel circus show and a wide receiver corps that could be minus Josh Gordon.

Browns, OC Kyle Shanahan part ways
Split reportedly due to disagreement over Manziel
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jan 8, 5:15 pm

Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns' tradition of change continues, as a team source told ESPN.com Thursday that OC Kyle Shanahan and QBs coach Dowell Loggains will not return next season. Shanahan resigned and Loggains was fired, according to a league source. Both spent one year with the Browns, and both were under contract for 2015. Sources familiar with the situation said the split was caused because the pair did not see eye to eye with the front office about QB Johnny Manziel. The front office wants Manziel to be the starter, and the source said the coaches do not believe they can win with him. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Good luck to the Browns finding another offensive mind that did what Shanahan did for their offense in 2014. The Browns were without three Pro Bowlers on offense for large portions of the season: C Alex Mack, TE Jordan Cameron and WR Josh Gordon. Despite that, the Browns scored at least 21 points in nine of the first 11 games. Shanahan's departure figures to have a significant impact on the fantasy values of every Cleveland player, particularly Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West.

Injury Johnny Manziel (hamstring) out for year
Connor Shaw could get start Week 17
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 22, 4:40 pm

Cleveland Browns
Browns HC Mike Pettine: "Brian Hoyer (shoulder) has not been ruled out. Connor Shaw will get a good amount of reps. Exploring other options." (Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Johnny Manziel's disappointing two-game run as the Browns' starter is over. The Browns already know what they have with Hoyer, so it would come as a surprise if they didn't turn to Shaw after he was arguably the most impressive quarterback in their camp during the preseason. Shaw can run a little bit and showed in his final year at South Carolina that he could make good decisions in Steve Spurrier's offense. Perhaps Shaw can give Cleveland's offense the jump-start it desperately needs.

Johnny Manziel to start for Cleveland
Browns make switch at QB
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Dec 9, 1:15 pm

Cleveland Browns
The Johnny Manziel era in Cleveland Browns football is officially under way. Fox's Jay Glazer was the first to report the news that Manziel will start. The former Heisman Trophy winner will start his first NFL game Sunday against the 8-4-1 Bengals at FirstEnergy Stadium, taking over a 7-6 Browns team that Hoyer guided to the brink of the playoffs. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

FFToday's Take: The writing was on the wall after a second dismal performance from Brian Hoyer. Manziel will step into a decent fantasy situation now that Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron are back in the mix. The Bengals-D has been solid against opposing fantasy QBs despite being torched by Ben Roethlisberger last week for 350 yards and 3 TDs.

QB Brian Hoyer remains starter for Browns
Cleveland not ready to hand reins to Manziel
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Dec 3, 2:43 pm

Cleveland Browns
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Brian Hoyer has held off Johnny Manziel and will start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, a league source confirmed for Northeast Ohio Media Group. Hoyer has been informed by Browns coach Mike Pettine that he will take the field against the 8-4 Colts on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. (Northeast Ohio Media Group)

FFToday's Take: With the Browns in the playoff hunt it isn't too surprising that the veteran Hoyer would get the nod to start week 14. Operating under what is expected to be a short leash, Hoyer will be a very risky fantasy option for week 14. With only a few weeks left in the fantasy season, Manziel's fantasy upside is greatest in dynasty and keeper formats.
