As one of the most polarizing players in the NFL, Johnny Manziel provides a similarly tantalizing dilemma for fantasy owners. He has undeniable physical gifts, but does he have enough between the ears to win the starting job and run with it? A dynamo on the ground and in the air, Johnny Football dazzled the college ranks for two years at Texas A&M. He showed improved development as a pocket passer in his short collegiate career, but enters a pro system that will undoubtedly test his discipline and maturity.

A positive for Manziel is the presence of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan knows a little something about getting the most out of fleet-footed rookie quarterbacks. Expect Shanahan to employ Manziel on a bevy of rollouts and bootlegs to give him the throw/run option. No matter who is under center, the Browns will use a running-based offense, especially considering the potential loss of All-Pro receiver Josh Gordon. Manziel will be a part of that attack and with enough playing time, he could approach 100 carries. Any potential fantasy impact that Manziel might have will be tied to playing time. If he can win the job in camp, he should start all 16 games. Manziel's cocky attitude, reckless play style and sinewy rocket arm harken back to a young Brett Favre. In his first year as a starter for the Packers, Favre put up 3,000+ yards passing and had a respectable 18-14 touchdown to interception ratio. With a limited offense, experience and weapons to throw to, Manziel's full-season stats are most likely capped at QB2 potential. Keep a close eye on his development, as Manziel could be a valuable spot starter late in the season for a needy fantasy owner.

Brian Hoyer to start Week 1 for Cleveland
Hopefully a portion of the hype will die down
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Aug 20, 10:03 am

Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have committed to start Brian Hoyer over rookie Johnny Manziel at quarterback to begin the 2014 season, the team announced Wednesday morning. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: One of the more over-hyped stories in a decade has a conclusion. Although Hoyer will start the season under center, its only a matter of time before Manziel gets his chance. Both QBs are middling QB2s for fantasy purposes considering the lack of talent at the wide receiver and the expected run-heavy offense.

Browns undecided at starting QB
Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel still battling for No. 1
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Aug 19, 11:54 am

Cleveland Browns
Coach Mike Pettine still hasnít made up his mind about his starting quarterback (Johnny Manziel or Brian Hoyer) for the Sept. 7 opener against Pittsburgh. (Peter King, Sports Illustrated)

FFToday's Take: It's hard to say who would be the better quarterback for fantasy purposes, since Hoyer had success last season but Manziel is likely the better athlete. In light of Manziel's most recent behavior, however, it seems Hoyer is more mature and has a better feel for the offense. Hoyer seems like the more logical choice.

Hoyer to start Browns' preseason opener
Johnny Manziel could see snaps with the starters
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Aug 6, 5:40 pm

Cleveland Browns
BEREA, Ohio -- Brian Hoyer will start the Cleveland Browns' preseason opener Saturday in Detroit. "It was [Hoyer's] job," coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday. "He was 'the one' coming into it. We did want to mix the groups up, as we did. But he's done nothing to have that taken away from him, so he'll be out there with the starters." (ESPN.com)

FFToday's Take: Head Coach Mike Pettine also indicated that he would like to name a starter based on the team's first two preseason games. That puts plenty of pressure on both Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel to make a strong impression out of the gates. At this point it appears Hoyer has not lost his job during training camp and would have to struggle in the next few weeks to lose the job prior to the season.

QB competition in Cleveland to begin Saturday
Browns to name starting QB by 3rd preseason game
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jul 22, 7:00 am

Cleveland Browns
Q: So the target date for naming a starter is still up in the air? A: ďYeah, itís definitely still up in the air. It could be sooner, and thatís something weíre going to discuss in that meeting. Itíll be before the third preseason game. I just donít have a date. I donít know if Iíll set a date and kind of paint ourselves into a date, but it will be sooner than the third preseason game.Ē (Akron Beacon Journal)

FFToday's Take: Browns coach Mike Pettine wants to have his starting QB named before the most important preseason game. Brian Hoyer appears to be the frontrunner at the moment but Johnny Manziel has more than a fighting chance to win the job during camp. Without Josh Gordon in the mix, its hard to envision either one of these QBs as more than a backup for your fantasy team.

Injury Hoyer "securely ahead of Manziel" entering camp
Tate "nicked up"; rookie West running with first team
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jun 12, 6:00 pm

Cleveland Browns
Browns HC Mike Pettine said Brian Hoyer is "securely ahead' of Johnny Manziel. But Hoyer's lead is not "insurmountable''. Both quarterbacks have had their bright spots and struggles during minicamp, but Hoyer has looked more polished and decisive in his throws. In the backfield, Ben Tate and Terrance West will be competing for the starting job at running back, but Tate is not fazed by the rookie. In 11-on-11 drills, West has been getting reps with the first team along with Chris Ogbonnaya. "Thereís nobody in that room that scares me. Iím just honest," Tate said Thursday. (Cleveland Plain-Dealer)

FFToday's Take: Hoyer hasn't been allowed to take 11-on-11 reps yet, so very little can be taken from this story about the quarterback situation. As far as the running backs are concerned, beat writer Nate Ulrich tweeted Thursday that Tate was a "little nicked up". Although it probably nothing serious, it should be a reminder that West will be an awfully good handcuff for the brittle Tate in OC Kyle Shanahan's offense.
