2015 Outlook
Depth Chart
One of the more highly-touted fantasy rookies coming into the 2014 season, itís hard to not be disappointed about what Carlos Hyde actually produced. Hyde primarily played as the backup to Frank Gore throughout the season, finishing with 333 yards on 83 carries, a 4.0 yards per carry average. The yards per carry itself isnít too worrisome, but the fact that he was fresh for the vast majority of his carries throughout the season and still barely cracked four yards per carry has to give fantasy owners some pause heading into the 2015 season, where he is expected to be the 49ersí primary ball carrier.

With Gore now in Indianapolis, the second-year back, Hyde, will have a chance to prove he was worth a second-round draft pick a year ago. Gore took the eighth-highest number of carries of any back a season ago, and thereís little reason to believe that the 49ers wonít again rely heavily on the run. This bodes well for Hydeís chances to have a solid season, as he is almost a lock to touch the ball 180-plus times. Unfortunately for him, he will likely lose some touches to offseason acquisition Reggie Bush, particularly on third down. Hyde did make a few catches in 2014, but heís still primarily a first- and second-down back. Given his lack of production as a rookie, itís a little surprising to see Hyde going as high as he is, but itís all about opportunity. With Hyde likely to be the primary ball carrier on a run-heavy team, he should be a safe option to be a productive RB2 this season with RB1 upside.

Injury Carlos Hyde likely out again this week
RB still recovering from a foot fracture
By: John Canario | Fri Nov 20, 4:05 pm

San Francisco
Before the 49ers practiced on Wednesday, coach Jim Tomsula told reporters that running back Carlos Hyde would take part after missing the teamís last two games with a stress fracture in his left foot. While youíd imagine the coach has a direct line to the teamís medical staff, Tomsulaís information proved to be incorrect. Hyde didnít practice on Wednesday and he remained out of practice on Thursday, which makes it hard to imagine that heíll be in the lineup against the Seahawks even if the coach were to say that Hyde will be taking handoffs from Blaine Gabbert. (NBC Sports)

FFToday's Take: In Hyde's absence, journeyman backup and practice squad member Shaun Draughn will likely see the bulk of the carries again this week, after registering 96 total yards from scrimmage in his last appearance. He's a borderline low-end RB2/flex play this week.

Injury Carlos Hyde ruled out Sunday
RB is recovering from stress fracture in his foot
By: John Canario | Fri Nov 6, 9:50 pm

San Francisco
San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde has been ruled out of Sundayís game against the Atlanta Falcons, the team announced. Hyde has been dealing with a stress fracture in his left foot and did not practice all week. He missed last weekend's 27-6 loss against the St. Louis Rams. The second-year pro out of Ohio State ranks 15th in the NFL in rushing yards this season, with 470. (SI)

FFToday's Take: With Hyde ruled out, Reggie Bush injured, and Colin Kaepernick relegated to a backup role, there are no 49ers' offensive players worth starting this week. Who receives the most touches out of San Francisco's backfield this week is anybody's guess, but it'll probably be a mix of Kendall Gaskins, Shaun Draughn, and possibly even Jarryd Hayne.

Injury Bad news: Torn MCL for Reggie Bush
49ers RB situation in dire straits; team signs Shaun Draughn
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Nov 3, 9:07 am

San Francisco
San Francisco 49ers running back Reggie Bush will undergo season-ending surgery on his torn MCL on Tuesday, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. With Carlos Hyde (foot) and Mike Davis (hand) both injured, that leaves newly acquired Shaun Draughn as the only healthy back. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: What a mess. Bush, whose ACL was deemed OK after tests were negative, was carted off the field with a left knee injury Sunday, after he slipped on concrete near the stands in St. Louis on a punt return. Draughn wouldn't normally be a fantasy option, but he's being thrust into relevance by the barrage of injuries in the San Fran backfield.

San Francisco
49ers RB Carlos Hyde (foot) is good to go for tonight vs. Seahawks, despite being listed as questionable. That helps. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Hyde has been expected to play all week but the confirmation is nice. The Seahawks are giving up the fourth fewest fantasy points to runnings backs making Hyde and risky play in Week 7.

Injury Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush miss practice
49ers runners dealing with lower body injuries
By: Doug Orth | Wed Oct 14, 8:45 pm

San Francisco
Running back Carlos Hyde, the NFLís seventh-leading rusher, did not participate in 49ers practice Wednesday due to a foot injury. Reggie Bush (calf) also did not practice, leaving rookies Jarryd Hayne and Mike Davis as the only running backs on the 49ersí 53-man roster who were available. Bush did not play in the second half of the 49ersí game Sunday against the New York Giants due to the tightness in his calf. (

FFToday's Take: The 49ers may wind up testing the depth of their backfield if Carlos Hyde's foot proves problematic. Reggie Bush's constant injury concern leaves the door open for Mike Davis or Jarryd Hayne to assume a larger role in the offense. Hayne was given reps with the first team on Wednesday and seems to be the leading candidate to start if called upon this weekend.

Injury Carlos Hyde suffers multiple injuries in Week 2
Week 1 star avoided concussion, dealing with thigh contusion
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 21, 6:05 pm

San Francisco
Carlos Hyde exited the game Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third quarter and was cleared to return after testing negative for a possible concussion. Hyde returned to the 49ers' sideline in the fourth quarter. He did not return to action. "I got hit on the crown of my helmet, so I was dizzy when I got up. I felt better when I got to the sideline. The concussion test, I passed that and I was ready to go but they decided to pull me." (CSN Bay Area)

FFToday's Take: While it's good to know that Hyde avoided a head injury, he reportedly suffered a thigh bruise prior to departing and those injuries can be difficult for running back to shake off. The Niners stated that Hyde's status - regarding his leg contusion - will be "closely monitored throughout the week". Mike Davis did not fare well in relief of Hyde and San Francisco's Week 2 loss and it may be too much to ask for either one to have a big game against Arizona in Week 3.

Injury Reggie Bush to sit out of tilt with Steelers
49ers' RB dealing with calf strain
By: John Canario | Fri Sep 18, 4:35 pm

San Francisco
Reggie Bush, who suffered a left calf strain in the San Francisco 49ers' season-opening win against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, will not travel with the team to Pittsburgh for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Niners coach Jim Tomsula announced Friday. "We're going to leave him back here, let him get the treatment," Tomsula said. "Make sure it's 100 percent before we move [forward with him] there. Feel great about it being 100 percent fast too." Bush had not practiced this week but was seen walking without a limp in the team's locker room Thursday. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Under the bright lights of Monday night football, Carlos Hyde showed that he's a more than capable workhorse back, taking 26 totes for 168 yards and a pair of TDs. While Bush is out, Hyde should remain in line for 25-plus touches per game, and is always a must-start.

Injury RB Kendall Hunter placed on IR
Still recovering from ACL injury last season
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 5, 3:45 pm

San Francisco
Kendall Hunter is headed back to injured reserve. Hunter missed all of last season with a torn ACL, but was able to return to practice this summer and played in the teamís final two preseason games. Apparently that wasnít enough to convince the team that heís well enough to help them this season and the 2011 fourth-rounder will miss a second straight year. (Pro Football Talk)

FFToday's Take: Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush and Mike Davis are now locked in as the No.1, No.2, and No.3 running backs respectively for the 49ers.

Rugby star turned RB continues to shine for 49ers
Shifty runner Jarryd Hayne giving his all to earn roster spot
By: John Canario | Fri Sep 4, 4:00 pm

San Francisco
Only a few weeks ago, former Australian Rugby League player Jarryd Hayne was a blip on the NFL map. Predicted to bomb out in his rookie preseason with the San Francisco 49ers, Hayne instead has been doing everything right to assure him a final spot in the roster. Thursday night he did it again, running up the sideline before pummeling cornerback Lowell Rose. The move, known as a shoulder charge down under, has been banned in rugby league due to its dangerous nature. Hayne did more than just run over players, he also showed some nifty moves and agility to break off a big run. (SB Nation)

FFToday's Take: Hayne has amassed 175 rushing yards on 25 carries this preseason, good for an impressive 7.0 yards per carry. His inexperience playing football is going to limit any fantasy value he might otherwise have had, but he might be a name worth remembering should Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush both prove ineffective.
