|The Patriots spent a second round pick on Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois in 2014 and that pick may pay dividends during Brady’s suspension if he can keep them afloat during the first month of the season. Unfortunately for him, the team opens the season facing some of the league’s better defenses - Arizona, Miami, Houston and Buffalo. Garoppolo has no significant regular season experience but will be spending his third offseason with the team and will likely split reps with Brady during training camp, so he should be prepared. He also gets the same benefit of the weapons that Tom Brady will be supported by which should help him overcome his inexperience. The offensive philosophy shouldn’t change much, if at all, and Garoppolo has the athleticism and quick release to be successful in that system. If you draft Brady, adding Garoppolo in later rounds wouldn’t be a terrible idea, although you may want to also add another capable backup and play the matchups.
| Patriots list Jimmy Garappolo as doubtful|
Jacoby Brissett likely to start
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Sep 21, 6:20 pm
|The New England Patriots listed starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on their Wednesday injury report as doubtful for their Thursday Night Football game against the Houston Texans. Garoppolo sprained the AC joint in his shoulder during the Pats' Week 2 win over the Miami Dolphins. In Garoppolo's likely absence, third-round rookie Jacoby Brissett will get the start. FFToday's Take: This was to be expected even though New England continues to leave the door open by not ruling Jimmy Garappolo out. New England will likely roll with Jacoby Brissett making his first career start in a shortened week against a premier defensive unit. This might be the week to keep your Patriots on the bench and wait for reinforcements coming off extended rest in Week 4.
| Jimmy Garoppolo could still start Thursday night|
Patriots not ruling out talented backup taking field vs. Texans

|Ed Werder (@Edwerderespn) on Twitter: "#Patriots still believe there's a chance Jimmy Garoppolo can tolerate pain of AC joint sprain and start vs #Texans" (Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: It's hard to believe that the Patriots would trust a lame Garoppolo to somehow evade J.J. Watt and be more effective than Jacoby Brissett, but I guess anything's possible when it comes to Bill Belichick and his evil genius. Neither Garoppolo nor Brissett makes a quality fantasy starter in Week 3.
| Garoppolo out Week 3, could return Week 4|
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 19, 9:00 am
|Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (sprained AC joint) won’t start Thursday vs. Texans. But there is hope he’s back by Week 4. Huge break for NE (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Jacoby Brissett filled in for Garoppolo on Sunday and could get the start against the Texans on Thursday. Brissett went 6-9 for 92 yards against the Dolphins. Expect the Patriots to add a quarterback to the roster in the next day or two.
| Rob Gronkowski out Week 1|
Didn't make the trip to Arizona
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 9, 8:00 pm
|The Patriots announced Friday that tight end Rob Gronkowski will not play Sunday night, along with offensive linemen Jonathan Cooper and Nate Solder.
Gronk was limited in practice all week after injuring his hamstring a fortnight ago. (NFL.com)|
FFToday's Take: Gronk's pre-season hamstring injury is going to cost him at least Week 1. His absence means TE Martellus Bennett should see a slight increase in usage along with WR Julian Edelman. Jimmy Garoppolo will have his hands full with the Arizona defense on the road and without his best receiving threat.
