2016 Outlook
Depth Chart
In 2015, the Falcons reminded the fantasy community just how valuable a running back can be if given the opportunity to shoulder the majority of carries. Devonta Freeman outpaced all other fantasy horses despite barely reaching the 1000 rushing yard plateau. Tacking on an additional 73 receptions, three touchdowns and over 500 receiving yards pushed him ahead of the pack in only his second season. Unfortunately, Freemanís terrific results are not enough to keep NFL coaches from using more than one running back in todayís offenses. This sentiment rings truer when the team employs another talented and capable running back. Tevin Coleman seems to have carved out a role as the team enters 2016. How expansive that role is remains to be seen.

Freemanís status atop the depth chart wonít change due to Coleman, but his usage could take a hit now that the Falcons know what they have in the backfield. Additionally, the running game should get a boost if Alex Mack can solidify the offensive line. Mack is a Pro-Bowl caliber road grader when healthy. Combined with Jake Mathews and Andy Levitre, the left side of the line should provide the running game with ample room to maneuver. Considering the success Freeman experienced with last seasonís o-line, he has a good chance of posting another stellar fantasy season even with a decline in overall touches.

As is always the case with the top fantasy players from the season prior, Freeman is amongst the first players taken in early 2016 drafts. The real question as to whether he is a top five fantasy running back or simply a lower tier RB1 will depend on how the team chooses to divide the carries while keeping Julio Jones active in the passing game. Even with reduced touches, his opportunity and production in the red zone (most carries inside the 20 by a RB last season) keeps him in true RB1 territory.

Injury Coleman, Tamme ruled out for Falcons
Devonta Freeman locked in as RB1
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 2, 1:15 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Falcons running back Tevin Coleman, defensive end Dwight Freeney and tight end Jacob Tamme were all declared out for Thursday nightís game against Tampa Bay by the team on Wednesday. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

FFToday's Take: Coleman will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury leaving Devonta Freeman and Terron Ward to handle running back duties. Freeman should handle 70 percent of the RB workload Thursday against the Bucs. Rookie Austin Hooper will start at TE.

Injury Tevin Coleman misses practice Wednesday

Atlanta Falcons
Tevin Coleman (hamstring) won't practice today. Coach Dan Quinn said he's not sure of the extent of Coleman's injury. Ran some today. (Vaughn McClure on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Falcons signed Stevan Ridley this week which is an indication that they don't expect Coleman to play against the Packers. Expect a heavy dose of Devonta Freeman against a Packers defense that's given up the fewest fantasy points to the running back position.

Injury Tevin Coleman expected to miss time
Hamstring injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 24, 5:40 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Dan Quinn said he'll know more about Tevin Coleman's hamstring strain in the next couple days, but the Atlanta Falcons coach sounded prepared to make a roster move in case the running back is sidelined for any period of time. Coleman played 14 snaps in Sunday's 33-30 overtime loss to the San Diego Chargers before exiting. He scored on a 30-yard burst and had 74 combined yards on nine touches. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Devonta Freeman should slide into more of a feature-back role, while Terron Ward is expected to be promoted from the practice squad. Freeman was already a top-10 fantasy back sharing touches, so the next 1-2 weeks (presumably) may allow him to push 25 touches. The bad news is Atlanta's schedule may not cooperate, as Green Bay, Tampa Bay and Philadelphia await before the Falcons' Week 11 bye.

RB has sickle cell trait; Falcons head to Denver
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 3, 5:30 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Falcons coach Dan Quinn said team expects RB Tevin Coleman to play in Denver (sickle cell trait). (D. Orlando Ledbetter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Expect a very light workload. Former NFL safety Ryan Clark famously played in Denver back in 2007 without knowing he had sickle cell trait and ended up needing emergency surgery to remove his spleen and gall bladder. The Broncos' defense is among the best in the league again, but it has shown a slight weakness against the run. Devonta Freeman isn't likely to have a huge game, but he should be the best bet of all the Falcons to have a decent game next weekend.

Falcons to continue RB timeshare
Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman will continue to split carries
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 13, 3:50 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Devonta Freeman, the starter, played 36 of 65 offensive snaps while Tevin Coleman played 32. Coleman accumulated 117 total yards on his 13 touches, while Freeman had 40 yards on his 15. The Falcons hope to fix those run-game woes this week against the Oakland Raiders. Last week, the Raiders gave up 88 rushing yards on 22 attempts to Mark Ingram and the New Orleans Saints. The Raiders were 13th in the league against the run last season, surrendering 104.9 rushing yards per game. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: "We know both these guys are going to be a factor,'' Quinn said. ``We just had two running backs active [Sunday], so for the whole portion of the game, both of them have done significant things really well. Weíre going to utilize them both. Looks like owners will have to get used to the fact that neither will assume a Lamar Miller-type of workhorse role going forward.
