Matt Jones fighting for roster spot
Redskins taking six RBs to training camp
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jun 28, 10:30 am

Washington Redskins
As it stands, the Redskins will carry six backs into training camp next month in Richmond: Kelley, Perine, third-down specialist Chris Thompson, Brown, Matt Jones and Keith Marshall. Jordan wants to see Jones fight to distinguish himself among them. "Matt has played some football and made some plays for us early in his career. So now, it’s about just rekindling what he had before." (Washington Post)

FFToday's Take: Jones was benched midway through last season for fumbling issues and didn't take it very well. The Redskins reportedly attempted to trade Jones prior to the draft and Jones missed voluntary workouts this off-season. For now, he's on the outside looking in at Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine and Thompson.

Matt Jones awaiting trade or release
No-show for voluntary workouts
By: Mike Krueger | Tue May 30, 3:20 pm

Washington Redskins
Running back Matt Jones remained a no-show as the Redskins kicked off their second week of voluntary offseason practices. The third-year pro isn’t expected to attend any of the remaining five voluntary sessions (two more this week, and three next week). (Washington Post)

FFToday's Take: Jones was reportedly told by coaches that he's no longer in their plans so the running back is working out on his own while he awaits his release. Rob Kelley and rookie Samaje Perine are candidates for early-down work while Chris Thompson is expected to be the third-down back. Jones is talented enough to hook on with another team and should do so at some point this pre-season.

Fewer catches for Gurley in 2017?
Dunbar could be Chris Thompson clone
By: Mike Krueger | Tue May 30, 9:30 am

The Rams, under a new offensive-minded head coach in Sean McVay, are determined to help Gurley recapture his big-play ability. But they might not count on him to be as much of a factor in the passing game. They have replaced Benny Cunningham, a more traditional backup running back who saw a lot of third-down snaps, with Lance Dunbar, who, when healthy, can be a major pass-catching threat out of the backfield. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: McVay used Chris Thompson as a pass-catching back in Washington so it's not a stretch to think Dunbar could fill a similar role for the Rams. Gurley saw 43 receptions last year but its safe to say he may not reach that total in 2017. Rebounding from a poor fantasy season will come down to repairing a 3.2 yards per carry average.
