2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
For the first 12 weeks of the season Bernard was basically a no-show, with 5-8 non-impactful touches a game. Maybe it was the sorry state of the Bengal offense, or a slow return as he worked his way back from a 2016 ACL injury, but for most of the fantasy season Bernard wasn't even worth a roster spot. But sometimes fantasy is all about opportunity, and that's what Bernard received in Week 13 when he got the start for an injured Mixon. He put up 96 total yards in a narrow loss to the Steelers, and continued to give the offense a spark with 100+ yards in two of the final four games of the season. Being quicker to the hole than Mixon allowed Bernard to find enough gaps to surpass 5 yards-per-carry four times to end the season.

Bernard has been a consistent dual threat for the Bengals since his rookie year, but it's long been clear that Cincinnati views him only as a passing game/change of pace option. With the team set to lean on Mixon, Bernard should be able to thrive in his part-time role. I know he finished strong last season, but in two of those games the Bengals were absolutely annihilated, and he was able to pick up lots of garbage time statistics. Nearly two years removed from his ACL injury, and still on a team that doesn't have many reliable passing catching options, Bernard not only makes for a strong handcuff for Mixon owners, but a real option in PPR leagues. 700 total yards and a few touchdowns makes him a tough sell in standard leagues, but he should be good value for where you can draft him.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury John Ross back at practice, Gio Bernard limited
Ross expected to play
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 7, 5:00 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
WR John Ross, RB Giovani Bernard both practiced for the second straight time this week. Ross looks destined to play, Bernard not as concrete, but being out there is a very good sign. (Paul Dehner Jr. on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Bengals will be without their top wideout A.J. Green this week meaning other receivers will need to fill the void. Ross will likely get the start along side Tyler Boyd. Bernard has missed the last five weeks with a knee injury. He'll play a complementary role if he's able to return in Week 10.

Injury Giovani Bernard, John Ross out for Bengals
Bernard out 2-4 weeks with MCL sprain

Cincinnati Bengals
John Ross, Giovani Bernard, Billy Price all out. Expect a roster move later today moving Eifert to IR and promoting Burfict off roster exemption. (Paul Dehner Jr. on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With Bernard expected to miss a couple weeks, Joe Mixon will resume his starting role in the offense. Head coach Marvin Lewis hinted Mixon might get his usual workload due to lack of conditioning during rehab. Expect to see Mark Walton get some carries against the Dolphins as well.

Bengals running back
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 3, 12:45 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Giovani Bernard not practicing today. Got hurt at end of Atlanta game. (Paul Dehner Jr. on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Bernard got banged around in Week 4 and missed the final few plays of the game. Joe Mixon is practicing today and appears on track to play this week. Hopefully we'll get a clearer picture of the Bengals backfield later in the week.

Injury Mixon misses practice Thursday, Bernard limited
Mixon running, cutting
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 27, 1:00 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Mixon said his knee "feels great" running, cutting and conditioning. Could he play Sunday? "I wish... just waiting 'till they clear me." (Paul Dehner Jr. on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Mixon was officially listed as DNP on Wednesday and Thursday while Giovani Bernard was listed as limited. It appears Mixon will miss this week but has a good chance of returning to action in Week 5.

Injury Joe Mixon expected to have knee surgery
Cleanup procedure
By: Doug Orth | Fri Sep 14, 7:00 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon came out of Thursday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens multiple times, gritting through pain to help finish out the 34-23 win. Reports indicate Mixon will need arthroscopic surgery on his knee and sought a second opinion. The issue is not thought to be serious through the lens of the season, but could keep Mixon out for a couple games, via Adam Schefter. The good news for the Bengals is they have 10 days off until they play at Carolina. (Cincinnati Enquirer)

FFToday's Take: Arthroscopic procedures are typically come with a 2-4 week recovery time. While Mixon is out, Giovani Bernard will take over as the lead back with Tra Carson and Mark Walton filling out the depth chart. The Bengals schedule includes: @Carolina, @ Atlanta, Miami and Pittsburgh.
