2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
Bernard was having trouble holding a ton of value even before going down in Week 10 with a torn ACL. Outside of a huge 9-catch, 100-yard receiving day in Week 2, Bernard wasn't producing his typical numbers in the air, failing to surpass 50 yards or 5 receptions. Seeing as much of his value in standard leagues (and especially PPR leagues) came via the air, this was a letdown for fantasy owners. Cincinnati seems to have never seen Bernard as a lead back, and with the addition of rookie Joe Mixon, this is more evident than ever.

The good news for Bernard is that his recovery from ACL surgery seems to have been flawless, and he's making noise in camp. I don't think the Bengals anticipated having Bernard for meaningful snaps to start the season, but now that they do, this will change the backfield rotation significantly. Look for Jeremy Hill to remain the goal-line back, and for Bernard to be the 3rd down and no-huddle option. At least early on, look for Mixon to be sprinkled in, and Bernard to be good for 8-10 touches a game. I don't know that this changes much as the season goes on, so I have real trouble finding a place for Bernard in standard leagues. It's simply not enough volume for a guy who averages around 4 yards-per-carry for his career. So while the injury risk isn't as big as it once was, the development of Mixon weighs more heavily on Bernard's value. Add Gio as one of the last runners on your roster and hope Mixon gets off to a slow start I guess.

Injury Joe Mixon expected to be active
Will test anke in pre-game warmup
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 31, 8:00 am

Cincinnati Bengals
#Bengals RB Joe Mixon wants to test his ankle in pre-game today, but the team does expect him to be active against the #Ravens, source said. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Mixon has been limited in practice this week but should be back on the field in Week 17. His return knocks Giovani Bernard down the fantasy rankings making both risky fantasy plays on the road against the Ravens.

Injury Joe Mixon practices Wednesday
Still needs to clear concussion protocol
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 20, 4:00 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Mixon is back to being a full participant in practice after missing two games with a concussion. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Mixon was a limited participant in practice last week but failed to clear the concussion protocol in time to play. A full practice today suggests he'll likely be ready for Week 16. Giovani Bernard would return to a backup role if Mixon is ready to go.

Injury Joe Mixon ruled out, Gio to start
Mixon doesn't clear concussion protocol
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Dec 16, 1:40 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Mixon did not pass concussion protocol and will not play Sunday against the Vikings. (Katherine Terrell on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Mixon did practice this week but wasn't able to get cleared from the concussion protocol. Expect Giovani Bernard to start and see the bulk of the carries for the Bengals. The Vikings have allowed the 2nd fewest fantasy points to running backs.

Injury Mixon, Bernard limited on Thursday
Mixon returns to practice after missing Wednesday
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 14, 1:00 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Good news for the Bengals, as Joe Mixon (concussion) returned to practice today in a limited capacity, as did Darqueze Dennard. Still no Dre Kirkpatrick or Vontaze Burfict though. Cedric Ogbuehi, Pat Sims, Shawn Williams and Giovani Bernard are limited. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Both Bengals RBs were limited Thursday which is an upgrade for Mixon and status quo for Bernard. At this point, we don't have any clarity on who will start but it's a positive sign for Mixon that he was able to get some work in today. The Bengals have a difficult matchup on the road against the Vikings in Week 15.

Injury Joe Mixon still in concussion protocol
Bernard limited in practice Wednesday
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 13, 4:10 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Mixon, Dre Kirkpatrick and Vontaze Burfict all still in concussion protocol. (Paul Dehner Jr. on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Mixon missed Week 14 with a concussion and isn't starting the week off on a good note. Meanwhile Giovani Bernard was limited Wednesday with a knee injury. There's no indication that Bernard's injury is serious enough to keep him out in Week 15. If he plays, Bernard will have a difficult matchup on the road against the Vikings-D.

Injury Joe Mixon ruled out, Gio to start
Mixon misses practice all week
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Dec 8, 11:45 am

Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals have ruled out six of their starters for Sunday's game against the Bears, including five on defense. Vontaze Burfict, Dre Kirkpatrick and Joe Mixon all sustained concussions on Monday, while cornerback Adam Jones injured his groin early in the game. Linebacker Nick Vigil and safety Shawn Williams had injuries prior to Monday night's game and have been ruled out as well. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Mixon missed practice all week and will be inactive in Week 14. Giovani Bernard will get the start and likely see the majority of snaps for the Bengals against the Browns. Brian Hill will serve in a backup role but isn't a fantasy option. With a solid RB2 outlook and upside for more, Gio will be a popular play in DFS and season-long leagues.

Injury Doug Martin practices in full Wednesday
Still in concussion protocol
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 6, 4:30 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
DE Robert Ayers and RB Doug Martin practiced fully but are still in concussion protocol. Both players still need to clear concussion protocol so their status for Sunday remains uncertain. (DetroitLions.com)

FFToday's Take: Martin is on track to play assuming he clears the protocol by this weekend. It's unclear what role he will have given Peyton Barber had a solid game against the Packers last week. Fantasy owners should prioritize Giovani Bernard over Barber on the waiver for now.

Injury Mixon misses practice Wednesday
Concussion
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 6, 2:30 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Starting cornerbacks Adam Jones (groin) and Dre Kirkpatrick (concussion) were injured against the Steelers, as was starting running back Joe Mixon (concussion, shoulder) and linebacker Vontaze Burfict (concussion). None of those players participated in practice on Wednesday. (Cincinnati.com)

FFToday's Take: If Mixon were to sit this week, Giovani Bernard would get the start with Brian Hill filling a backup role. The Bengals face the Bears this week. Chicago represents a neutral matchup for fantasy running backs.
