2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Lamar Miller failed to secure his standing as the future running back for the Dolphins when he was named the team's starting running back last season. The team was disappointed enough in his performance to sign former Bronco free agent Knowshon Moreno to compete for the job – if Miami doesn't hand it to him. Luckily for the former Hurricane, Moreno showed up to camp injured and out of shape, and may miss all of training camp following a recent knee surgery. Miller rushed for 709 yards on 177 carries in 2013 and failed to separate himself from the pedestrian Daniel Thomas in the running team's back rotation. Miller has above-average speed, but runs with little power and shows no tackle-breaking ability despite having good size for a running back at 224 lbs. Reports from OTAs are that he has looked good, but of course no contact drills without pads play to his strengths. Moreno's injury has put Miller “clearly ahead” of the former Bronco on the depth chart, but if Moreno recovers fully and quickly, it's unlikely that Miller will do enough to bury him for good. Early fantasy drafters will need to proceed with caution on this situation.

Injury Lamar Miller no worse for wear after Week 10
Dolphins promote LaMichael James from practice squad
By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 10, 2:40 pm

Miami Dolphins
It is apparently not as it bad as it looks for Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller (separated AC joint). He carried only four times, which was the fewest time this year and less than either Daniel Thomas or Damien Williams. The Dolphins also informed practice squad RB LaMichael James on Monday that he was being promoted to the 53-man roster. But a source tells me Miller "is fine" and that he did not reinjure his shoulder in Week 10. He can practice this week (if that's what trainers decide) and play against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, barring another setback to the shoulder. (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: The promotion of James would typically mean that Miller was a question for Thursday's AFC East battle with Buffalo, but it appears to be a play-it-safe move more than anything else. Regardless, the Bills possess one of the best run defenses in the league, making any Dolphins' running back a flex play at best in Week 10.

Injury Lamar Miller suffers shoulder injury in Week 9
Sprained AC joint
By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 3, 4:00 pm

Lamar Miller left Sunday’s game late in the third quarter with a shoulder injury. As part of its examination, the team’s medical staff asked Miller to lift his hand over his head. He could only get it about halfway. Flash-forward to the victorious locker room, and he showed a similar difficulty when putting on his shirt. But Miller, who rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, said he only sustained a stinger and could have returned to the game, had that outcome not already been decided. (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: Dolphins beat writer Armando Salguero tweeted Monday that Miller was diagnosed with a sprained AC joint - the same injury that has bothered DeSean Jackson and Jordan Cameron this season. Given Miller's position, he is at a much higher risk of aggravating the injury than Jackson or Cameron. Thus, Damien Williams and Daniel Thomas - in that order - should be considered as must-have handcuffs until further notice.

Injury Knowshon Moreno out for the year, ACL injury
Dolphins RB placed on IR
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Oct 14, 8:44 am

Miami Dolphins
Knowshon Moreno’s first year with the Dolphins is over after just three games. The Dolphins announced Tuesday that Moreno has suffered an ACL injury. As a result, they placed him on injured reserve. (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: This explains why Moreno only got 1 carry after halftime in Week 6. Lamar Miller will no flirt with RB1 territory and should be the lead back in Miami moving forward. Moreno will be a free agent next season.

Injury Moreno to return in Week 6?
Practicing on limited basis Monday
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 6, 5:25 pm

Miami Dolphins
Dolphins RB Knowshon Moreno, out the past three weeks with an elbow injury, is practicing today at least on a limited basis. He hopes to play on Sunday against Green Bay although no final determination has been made on that front. (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: Reports on Moreno's return have been all over the map in the last two weeks, with one suggesting he may be sidelined until about Week 10 last week. Moreno should return to split carries with Lamar Miller when he does make it back to the field, although Miller did show well in the Dolphins' pre-bye win over Oakland. Whenever he makes it back, he should benefit from the return of C Mike Pouncey, who is expected to make his season debut in Week 6.

Injury Knowshon Moreno expected to miss 4-8 weeks
Dislocated elbow
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 14, 8:00 pm

Miami Dolphins
Moreno was injured on his first touch of the game Sunday in a 29-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills and did not return. Moreno will miss four to eight weeks with a dislocated elbow and possible fracture. (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: To make matters worse, Lamar Miller left in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury, but should be OK. Rookie Damien Williams is next in line behind Miller with Moreno out.

Miller and Moreno to continue rotation
Moreno rushed for 134 yards on 24 carries in opener
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 8, 4:30 pm

Miami Dolphins
Though Lamar Miller started the game, Knowshon Moreno played more snaps, 48 to 27. Moreno ran for 134 yards on 24 carries (5.6), Miller 59 on 11 (5.4 average). Lazor said he did not even think about who should be the starter until a team official mentioned to him Monday that reporters might ask him about it. “The question about who takes the first snap...I hadn’t considered it really yet,” he said. “I expect them both to contribute." (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: Although the assertion that Lazor "had not thought about his starter at running back" is hard to believe, there is every reason to believe Miller and Moreno will continue to rotate snaps. Both backs have a chance to be relevant in fantasy if Miami manages to give its backs 35 carries like it did on Sunday. That's highly unlikely to happen, of course, meaning both backs figure to be flex plays at best for the near future.

Moreno the "clear lead back" in Miami?
OC suggests Lamar Miller needs to be more productive
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 1, 3:40 pm

Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins wanted Lamar Miller to be their starter this season and wanted him to be productive. As it stands now, he's not either. Even if Miller is the player introduced with the starters - which he might not be - it is clear Knowshon Moreno is Miami's lead running back. Miller, who was the starter and unchallenged all preseason, has lost his job as Miami's lead back. "I've seen lots on the practice field that tells me where we're headed with Lamar and I feel very good about his ability to be productive," OC Bill Lazor said, "but if you're talking about the preseason games his production needs to improve." (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: Lazor is referring to Miller's 3.4 YPC in exhibition play, as compared to Moreno's 6.4. And to be clear, Lazor did not state Miller has lost his starting job. What those stats don't say is that all of Moreno's production came against Dallas' pitiful defense. The Dolphins are kidding themselves if they are counting on Moreno to carry their ground game, so like last year, expect Miller to be involved in a full-blown committee backfield until further notice.

Miller, Moreno split first team reps last two days
Philbin non-committal on starting RB
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Aug 26, 9:46 pm

Miami Dolphins
Lamar Miller and Knowshon Moreno split first-team snaps the past two days. Joe Philbin said the job is open but has been far more effusive and expansive discussing Miller than Moreno this week. "I like everything Lamar has done since he’s gotten here," Philbin said. “He’s had an excellent offseason and camp... I like everything he's done since April 21." (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: Reading between the lines it appears Miller still has a leg up on the starting running back job, but in the end it's likely to be a timeshare with Moreno operating on third downs. Both backs are dicey picks in the middle of your fantasy draft.
