|Considered the premier pass-catching tight end prospect in the 2012 draft, Fleener was a disappointment as a rookie, missing four games and hauling in just 26 of his 48 targets for 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The truth is that he was on the verge of losing playing time to fellow rookie Dwayne Allen when a shoulder injury sent Fleener to the sideline starting in Week 9. Prior to the injury, he averaged 5.1 targets per game, but that declined to just 2.5 post-injury. And while Fleener was a big-play receiver at Stanford, he averaged just 10.8 yards per reception as a rookie. The only good news is that the Colts are moving to a West Coast based offense that should feature the team's tight ends more in 2013. However, since Fleener will be splitting targets with Allen, he rates as a TE3 this season.
Reggie Wayne out for season -- Mon Oct 21 2:45 pm --
Torn right ACL
Confirmed and crushing: tests showed Colts WR Reggie Wayne has a torn ACL. His season and streak of 189 straight games is over. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)
FF Today's Take: Updating an earlier report, an MRI confirmed what the Colts feared. T.Y. Hilton and Darrius Heyward-Bey will be the regular starters for now, but aggressive GM Ryan Grigson could easily swing a trade to land a veteran receiver that is reportedly on the block, such as the New York Giants' Hakeem Nicks or Cleveland Browns' Josh Gordon. TE Coby Fleener will also likely be asked to take on a more important role as well.
Dwayne Allen out for the year -- Wed Sep 18 12:45 pm --
Will undergo hip surgery
The Indianapolis Colts have taken another major hit on the injury front, losing tight end Dwayne Allen to season-ending hip surgery. Allen suffered the injury in the season-opener against the Oakland Raiders. He was held out of the Miami game. (Indianapolis Star)
FF Today's Take: Coby Fleener will step into a starting role and has low-end TE1 value moving forward. Fred Davis owners should hit the waiver wire immediately and make the switch.
Dwayne Allen misses practice Fri. -- Fri Sep 13 8:00 pm --
Hip injury may shelve Colts TE for Week 2
After the shock of Vick Ballardís season-ending knee injury eased, attention turned to the status of tight end Dwayne Allen. He again was held out of practice after suffering a hip injury in the opener against Oakland. Allen is questionable for Miami, which by NFL standards gives him a 50-50 shot at playing. (Indianapolis Star)
FF Today's Take: He may be listed as Questionable but the chances of him playing aren't good after missing practice the entire week. If Allen sites, increased action for Coby Fleener and receiver T.Y. Hilton will likely occur. Dominique Jones would be the second tight end behind Fleener.
