|Raise your hand if you got burned by Trent Richardson last year. Like you, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson offered up a first-round draft pick for a player who stumbled and bumbled his way to a miniscule 3.0 yards per carry. His rookie season provides hope of a rebound, but how realistic are his chances when he looked so bad running the ball and is now coming off a shoulder surgery too? The risk adverse will pass on T-Rich at every turn this year but fantasy owners could be wrong on a guy who looked like one of the few three down running backs only two years ago. He was limited in OTAs following shoulder surgery that saw him gain weight, yet should be cleared for more contact as the preseason progresses.
When Richardson is running well, he is physical and willing to take on defenders. He has been getting reps with the first team and should see the bulk of the workload ahead of Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard. Without seeing him in full contact fantasy owners should still be cautious in drafting him on upside alone. Few running backs being taken outside the top 50 overall have as much upside with touches and touchdown potential than the third overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, though.
| Trent Richardson dealing with hamstring issue|
Colts' running back not practicing
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Jul 27, 3:10 pm
|The Colts have been using the term “soft-tissue” issue when talking about why running back Trent Richardson has not been practicing in training camp. Richardson has a hamstring issue. Richardson isn’t practicing, but he has been catching passes off the Jugs machine at the conclusion of practices. (ESPN)|
FFToday's Take: With Vick Ballard (Achilles) out for the season, Ahmad Bradshaw has been running with first team during the early portion of training camp. Richardson's hamstring issue doesn't appear to be serious but it's something to monitor moving forward.
| Vick Ballard likely out for the season|
Torn Achilles, MRI pending
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jul 25, 9:00 pm
|Two days into training camp and the Colts already are dealing with their first major injury.
Running back Vick Ballard, only now returning from season-ending knee surgery last September, suffered what team owner Jim Irsay said is a likely torn left Achilles tendon during a non-contact drill Friday. (Indianapolis Star)|
FFToday's Take: Ballard will have an MRI to confirm the diagnosis but it sounds like he will be lost for the season. He was active for one game in 2013 before suffering an ACL injury. Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw remain the top two options at running back for the Colts. Chris Rainey and Dan Herron are also on the roster.

Ballooned to 240 pounds after shoulder surgery
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jun 5, 5:45 pm
|The red jersey Trent Richardson was wearing during OTAs last week said it all (about he looked coming off postseason shoulder surgery). Richardson said it's more of a precaution and that he hopes he’ll be allowed to take it off soon. One thing that stood out when Richardson talked was that he had ballooned up to 240 pounds because he "ate well" and was limited in what he could do cardio-wise after the surgery. He said he’s lost 15 pounds and is back down to 225. (ESPN)|
FFToday's Take: Richardson rushed for a disappointing 505 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games with the Colts following his trade from the Cleveland Browns. The third-year back looked slow and indecisive for most of 2013, so he doesn't need anything else holding him back. He's a strong candidate for a bounce-back season, but will probably need to show 2012 form in order to be the unquestioned starter in Indy.
