2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
The conventional wisdom says Robert Griffin III rushed back too quickly from his torn ACL injury, which led to a decline in his production from his rookie season. The word out of OTAs is that Griffin has flashed his dynamic 2012 form and looked “extremely explosive.” In 2012, Griffin threw for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions while also rushing for 826 yards with another seven touchdowns. In 2013, his rushing yards were nearly cut in half and he failed to score a rushing touchdown, while also regressing as a passer. Griffin spent the offseason working on his mechanics with quarterback instructor Terry Shea. Mike and Kyle Shanahan are no longer in Washington, and Robert Griffin III will now work with offensive-minded head coach Jay Gruden and new offensive coordinator Sean McVay. In addition, the team brought in more dynamic weapons for their young quarterback, signing former Eagle DeSean Jackson and former Cardinal Andre Roberts in free agency. All signs are pointing to a great fantasy football season from RGIII and the fickle masses just may forget how valuable of a weapon he was in 2012 after his disappointing 2013. Griffin is still one of the most dynamic runners in the league and Gruden has stated that while he may not use the read option often, he won't necessarily ask Griffin not to run the ball when the opportunity arises. Any potential drop off in Griffin's rushing production should be offset by an uptick in his passing statistics. Combine Griffin's offseason work and health, Gruden's offensive mind and the influx of talent in the passing game, and it's hard to imagine Washington's passing offense not taking a leap forward in 2014.

Injury Jay Gruden to decide on RG3 tomorrow
Colt McCoy to start if Griffin III can't play
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Oct 22, 7:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Jay Gruden said Wednesday that he would like to have made a decision on whether Robert Griffin III will play against Dallas following a workout and a medical examination on Thursday morning. While Gruden has told McCoy that he will be the starter on Monday if Griffin is not medically cleared to play, Gruden did say that Griffin is the “wild card” for that game. (Washington Times)

FFToday's Take: Griffin III has upside as a QB2 for the second half of the fantasy season yet inconsistency prevents him from being a reliable starter. He should not be relied upon for Week 8 even if he returns to action. The entire offense could struggle if Colt McCoy is asked to lead the Redskins against the Cowboys.

Injury Colt McCoy to draw Week 8 start
Assuming Robert Griffin III (foot) is unable to return
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 20, 6:55 pm

Washington Redskins
Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden said he's not going to rule out a return this week by quarterback Robert Griffin III. But Gruden also made it clear that Griffin still must show a lot in practice before the team declares him ready to start. If he doesn't start, then Gruden said Colt McCoy would do so against Dallas for the teams' Oct. 27 matchup. Griffin has not played since dislocating his left ankle in Week 2. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Griffin's initial optimistic timetable was 8-10 weeks, so a six-week return is highly unlikely. McCoy went 11-for-12 in relief of Kirk Cousins after he was benched at the start of the second half of Washington's Week 7 win over Tennessee. McCoy will likely start against Dallas (Week 8) and Minnesota (Week 9) before the Redskins' bye, possibly allowing RG3 to return in Week 11 versus Tampa Bay.

Injury Griffin III will start when he returns
Cousins is winless in four starts
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Oct 15, 6:30 pm

Washington Redskins
Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III returned to the practice field Wednesday and participated in individual drills for the first time since suffering a dislocated left ankle Sept. 14. Coach Jay Gruden said Griffin will once again be the team’s starter upon his return, whenever that might be. In the portion of practice open to the media, the third-year quarterback stretched with the team and threw passes to wide receivers alongside the team’s other quarterbacks. Griffin’s accuracy varied but the ankle did not appear to limit his movement. (Washington Times)

FFToday's Take: Kirk Cousins flashed some fantasy potential initially but costly turnovers have contributed to the team's four-game losing streak. RG3 is at least another week away and remains a wild card to help fantasy owners when he returns.

Injury RG3 will wear cast for 10 days
To be re-evaluated after cast is removed
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Sep 17, 4:30 pm

Washington Redskins
Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will wear the cast on his dislocated left ankle for roughly 10 days and then will have it re-evaluated, with the hope of then proceeding to around a month and a half of rehabilitation, Coach Jay Gruden said. (Washington Post)

FFToday's Take: Based on Jay Gruden's suggestions, the Redskins will be without Robert Griffin III for at least eight weeks in the best possible scenario. That would put his return at week 11 following the team's bye week. Kirk Cousins should be picked up in all formats as the clear starter for the next two months and possibly longer if he excels in Griffin III's absence.

Injury RG3 out indefinitely with dislocated ankle
Team believes he will return at some point in 2014
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 15, 4:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Robert Griffin III will have a cast put on his dislocated ankle but it remains unclear how long the quarterback will be sidelined, coach Jay Gruden said Monday. “We’ll know in a few more weeks how long he’ll be out,” Gruden said. Gruden said Griffin did not suffer any fractures or ligament damage and he would not be put on season-ending injured reserve, but the coach did not offer any timetable for a potential return. He said he does believe Griffin will be back this season. Kirk Cousins, who entered after Griffin left the game, will take over as the starting quarterback. (Washington Times)

FFToday's Take: Griffin and the team hopes he can make it back in 4-5 weeks, but that seems overly optimistic at this point. Furthermore, the team may be tempted to stretch it if Cousins can continue to perform well in the interim. It would be a surprise if Griffin can make it back before midseason, so owners in leagues with short benches may be forced to release him. Cousins should be a more-than-adequate replacement while he is recovering.
