|With Michael Turner in serious decline in 2012, Rodgers appeared to have some long-term fantasy potential. Unfortunately for Rodgers, once Steven Jackson lingered on the free agent market for too long, the Falcons pounced, acquiring the former Ram on a modest three-year deal. That put the fork in Rodgers' hopes of establishing himself as a full-time starter, a notion that was always a bit dubious given his 5'6”, 196-pound frame. After a moderately successful rookie season in which he ran for 205 yards and caught 21 passes for 188 yards, Rodgers totaled 362 rushing yards, 402 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2012. While his totals were up, it was largely based on volume, as he averaged just 3.9 yards per carry and saw his yards per reception drop from 9.0 to 7.6. Barring a collapse by Jackson, Rodgers just hasn't been productive enough to warrant a bigger role than he had in 2012 when he totaled 153 touches. Consider him a potential flex option in 12- and 14-team leagues and a mid- to lower-tier handcuff since he would likely split the role with Jason Snelling if Jackson were lost to injury.
Steven Jackson to return to practice -- Mon Oct 21 3:30 pm --
Sidelined four games with hamstring injury
Steven Jackson is set to return to practice on Wednesday, HC Mike Smith said on Monday. Jackson has been out with a hamstring injury since Sept. 15. He suffered the injury in the first quarter against the St. Louis Rams in Week 2 of the season. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
FF Today's Take: Atlanta may be engaging in some misinformation regarding Jackson, who reportedly had a setback last week. Jacquizz Rodgers has improved immensely over the last 1-2 seasons and has carved himself out a decent part-time role even when Jackson returns, but he cannot carry the ground game like the ex-Ram can. Once Jackson proves his health, expect him to resume a 20-touch role in the Falcons' shorthanded offense.
Steven Jackson may miss 2-4 weeks -- Tue Sep 17 12:10 pm --
Falcons RB dealing with quad injury
A person informed of the injury tells NFL Media insider's Ian Rapoport that Steven Jackson might miss 2-4 weeks with a thigh injury. The 30-year-old is officially viewed as "week-to-week." With Jackson out, Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling will likely split backfield duties. (NFL.com)
FF Today's Take: "Week to week" is a good indication that Jackson is all but out for Week 3 and likely longer. The Falcons face the Dolphins, Patriots and Jets before having a bye in Week 6. In the meantime a RBBC will be in place with Rodgers and Snelling. Rodgers will be slightly higher value in PPR leagues but neither back is going to be better than a flex-play given the pass-first offensive philosophy.
