Will "Madden Curse" affect Megatron?-- Wed Apr 25 8:45 pm -- Lions WR delighted to grace video game cover
Fresh off a mega contract, Calvin "Megatron" Johnson has landed the coveted cover of "Madden NFL 13." The Detroit Lions wideout beat out second-year Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for the honor. Although hugely popular, the video game carries the stigma of a "Madden Curse." Running back Peyton Hillis, then a member of the Cleveland Browns, won the fan vote last year, but was plagued by injuries and controversy in a hectic 2011 season.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Will Megatron shine or follow in the footsteps of such cover stars like Hillis, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb and Shaun Alexander? We think the the former. Johnson has missed just three games over five NFL seasons and has been a model of consistency, producing even when star quarterback Matt Stafford has been injured.
Newton ready to take on leadership role-- Fri Apr 20 8:25 pm -- Panthers QB appears "more mature" according to coach
After quarterback Cam Newton had what I consider to be the best rookie season by any NFL player at any position, you might think the Carolina Panthers wouldn’t want him to change one bit. In fact, however, they are excited that he seems a little different. “I had a chance to visit with him briefly and he seems like a different person,” Rivera said Thursday. “He seems more mature, in terms of ready to take some leadership roles.”(Charlotte Observer)
FF Today's Take:Newton was an absolute stud last season as a rookie and there is every reason to expect more of the same from him as an NFL sophomore. While he is unlikely to repeat the 14 rushing touchdowns he scored as a rookie, he is quite capable of posting big numbers through the air. He'll be a mid-first rounder in most formats next season.
Colts top pick to take over immediately-- Fri Mar 9 2:20 pm -- Similar to Manning in 1998
The rookie quarterback will own the Indianapolis Colts huddle from day one, as was the case in 1998. The transition from iconic QB to heralded rookie has been long anticipated, and finally was given a clear path Wednesday when owner Jim Irsay and Manning ended a 14-year partnership. The byproduct likely is twofold: Luck, the overwhelming favorite to be selected No. 1 overall by the Colts in the April 26-28 draft, getting immediate on-the-job training. The team actually paying more attention to the backup position. Since Manning's arrival, the No. 2 QB often has been an afterthought.(Indianapolis Star)
FF Today's Take:Recent trends have shown that rookie quarterbacks can step in, produce and even excel during their rookie seasons. Examples include Sam Bradford, Cam Newton and Andy Dalton. Unlike the three teams that these quarterbacks played for, the Colts don't have an established running back that can carry a heavy workload. Defenses focusing primarily on the Colts' passing game might make it harder for a rookie quarterback to post the numbers we've seen in recent years.
