2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Injuries and playing time have prevented Ben Tate from ascending into the upper tier of young runners. Given a one-way ticket to starter's snaps in Cleveland, Tate has a chance to showcase the skills that made him a fantasy darling in 2012. Back in the zone-blocking scheme of Kyle Shanahan, Tate will benefit from a familiar scheme and strong Cleveland offensive line. Sporting a great 4.6 yards per carry average for his career, Tate seems primed to climb the rankings and be a fantasy centerpiece. But before you go and make Tate a high draft pick, consider some of the red flags, the biggest being his injury history. In just three seasons Tate has missed eight games because of injury, and played hurt and ineffective in several more. He simply hasn't displayed the ability to stay healthy for an entire season and is a good bet to break down with too voluminous of a workload. His durability was most likely a reason why his free-agent reception was very lukewarm. The bigger roadblock to Tate's success could be his teammates. Terrance West, the third-round pick out of Towson has been impressive this offseason, as has undrafted free agent and former five-star recruit Isiah Crowell. If West's successful exploits continue into preseason action, look for Tate to cede a large volume of touches to him. Timeshare and injury concerns figure to limit Tate, but in an offense built to run the football, look for Tate to approach the 200-yard carry range and be a low-tier RB2 for your fantasy squad.

Comment: You'll see a lot of Tate and West on the ground in Cleveland this season as the Browns passing game struggles without Josh Gordon.

Ben Tate expected to start for Browns
Assuming no setbacks in practice this week
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Oct 2, 2:58 pm

Cleveland Browns
Ben Tate is "on course" to start at running back Sunday for the Cleveland Browns when they play the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, coach Mike Pettine said. How the running back rotation goes from that point is to be determined. "We know Ben will start," Pettine said. "But that's all we have at this point. And that's assuming that [Tate] comes out of this week as we expect." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Tate will get first crack to be the hot hand however if he struggles early, you could see a combination of Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. Crowell has showed more ability of the first four weeks and could be inline surpass West in the pecking order. Tate is a risky RB2 heading into Week 5.

Injury Tate expected to miss 2-4 weeks, sprained knee
West and Crowell will see increased reps
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 10, 6:53 am

Cleveland Browns
What is the timeline for injured #Browns RB Ben Tate? Iím told likely out 2-4 weeks, depending on how he heals. Youíll see West & Crowell. (Ian Rapoport via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It didn't take long for Tate to live up to his high-risk injury label. Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell will handle the running back duties in committee form with West likely to get the start. Both running backs should be owned in 12-team leagues.

Injury No update on Ben Tate, Jordan Cameron
Injuries caused both players to miss time in Week 1
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 8, 4:45 pm

Cleveland Browns
HC Mike Pettine said he doesn't have injury updates on RB Ben Tate (knee) or TE Jordan Cameron (shoulder). (Nate Ulrich on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Injuries that keep players from returning to game action that week typically do not bode well for their status the following week. Tate's injury-history is well-chronicled and should make Terrance West - if not Isaiah Crowell - attractive free-agent or trade targets this week. Jim Dray and Gary Barnidge filled in for Cameron following his departure, but neither player is worthy of fantasy consideration.

Injury Tate injures knee, rookie running backs shine
Severity of knee injury unknown
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 7, 10:00 pm

Cleveland Browns
In their NFL regular-season debuts, Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell combined for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns' 30-27 loss at Heinz Field. The Browns rushed for 183 yards - the most in four seasons - despite losing starter Ben Tate to a first-half knee injury. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

FFToday's Take: Tate had six carries for 41 yards before leaving with a knee injury. No update on his status was given after the game. West had 16 carries for 100 yards and would likely be starter next week if Tate is not ready to go while Crowell would work as a change-of-pace.

Browns rolling with two rookie RBs behind Tate
Isaiah Crowell makes team as third running back
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 30, 10:15 am

Cleveland Browns
The Browns have cut running back Chris Ogbonnaya, a league source tells cleveland.com. With tailback Dion Lewis being cut earlier in the day, that leaves rookie running back Isaiah Crowell as the third running back for now. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

FFToday's Take: It's not out of the question that the Browns would bring in another veteran running back, but for now Terrance West and Crowell are the immediate backups to Ben Tate. Crowell rumbled for 102 yards and a TD on the 13 carries Thursday night, locking himself into a roster spot.

Browns liking the look of rookie RBs
West and Crowell showing well early
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 28, 5:00 pm

Cleveland Browns
Terrance West has shown up to camp and played his butt off, showed off some real athleticism for a man his size and seems to bring extra energy to every play he's in. No matter what happens with Josh Gordon and the quarterbacks, the Browns are built to play good defense and to keep that defense rested, and this offensive line might be pretty good, too. The team also thinks it has a keeper in undrafted Isaiah Crowell. (Fox Sports)

FFToday's Take: West has been generating plenty of buzz throughout the offseason and needs to be considered at least the equal of Ben Tate in fantasy at this point as a perfect fit in OC Kyle Shanahan's zone-blocking run scheme. Crowell is arguably the most talented runner of the bunch and a former five-star recruit. West is a steal at his late seventh-round ADP, while Crowell could decide fantasy titles late in the season if both Tate and West go down.
