 Gronk given good news after surgery -- Mon May 20 11:10 pm --
No infection found in troublesome left forearm | Rob Gronkowski came out of surgery Monday with good news for the New England Patriots. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported that he had new plates put into his troublesome left forearm, and doctors have determined the infection in the arm is gone. No further surgery is planned at this time. The team now can turn its focus to Gronkowski's other issue - chronic back pain. Gronkowski recently underwent an MRI to determine the severity of the injury and will see spine specialist Robert Watkins in three to four weeks in California for a consultation, NFL.com's Albert Breer reported. FF Today's Take: The Patriots hope the back issue can be treated without surgery and the rehab process can be concurrent with the forearm. Gronk isn't in the clear by any stretch, but Monday was a positive development. There's now hope that Gronkowski can be ready for the start of training camp. Although his buy-low window may be closing, fantasy owners may be wise to trade him as he regains his value early in the season. At the very least, owners need to have a backup plan in mind.

May need back surgery in addition to forearm surgery | In addition to a fourth surgery on his broken forearm, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski might need back surgery, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Gronkowski recently underwent an MRI on his back to check on a disk issue from last season according to ESPN and media reports. The injury is not considered serious, the source said. If he needs back surgery, it would be performed during the time frame he would be sidelined after his forearm surgery, which is expected next week. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: Multiple media outlets are reporting this story but not everyone is on the same page. "He is going to be fine long term," a source close to Gronkowski said. "[He is] not worried about the short term, i.e., start of training camp." Gronk missed the 2009 season in college due to a herniated disk but this issue isn't related. It's another red flag for fantasy owners but we'll have to wait for more concrete news... stay tuned.

Infection in arm has Gronk's Week 1 status in question | New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski "very likely" will require a fourth surgery on his left forearm, this one to remove the plate inserted in the arm in order to ensure an infection has been eradicated, two sources told ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. If another surgery is required, the estimate for a recovery would be about 10 weeks. Depending on when the surgery can be performed, which would be determined by whether the infection is completely eradicated, Gronkowski's availability for the start of the 2013 season could be affected. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: We won't know if Gronk's Week 1 status will be in jeopardy until further examination of his arm is complete but this does likely mean that the Patriots tight end will miss at least a portion of training camp. Gronk is the premiere tight end in fantasy football but we won't downgrade his stock until more information becomes available.

TE a restricted free agent but could still be moved | As a restricted free agent, Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta was tendered at a cost of $2.023 million prior to the start of free agency. With Pitta getting the second-round tender, the former fourth-round draft pick has been the subject of preliminary inquiries from NFL teams that are interested in him, according to league sources with knowledge of the situation. (Baltimore Sun)
FF Today's Take: Pitta isn't the sexiest fantasy tight end out there, and while he may lack the flare of Jimmy Graham or the raw power of Rob Gronkowski, he gets the job done. The 27-year-old hauled in three touchdown passes in four postseason games and was a significant factor in the Ravens' offense in 2012.

Pats top WR headed elsewhere | New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has no plans to re-sign with the team before first testing the free-agent market next week, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Unrestricted free agents can officially sign with other teams starting Tuesday. Welker, 31, received the Patriots' franchise tag last offseason but New England didn't issue a franchise tender to any player for the 2013 season before this past Monday's deadline. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: It's common knowledge that Tom Brady and the Patriots' run a pass-heavy offense. Though tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez receive many of Brady's targets, management will need to find someone to fill Welker's role as a quick, sure-handed receiver, especially with Brandon Lloyd rumored to be on his way out as well.

Third surgery on same forearm for Pats tight end | New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent surgery last week for an infection in the same forearm that he broke on multiple occasions this past season, league sources told ESPN. The infection was caught early enough that Gronkowski is not expected to miss any extended time, according to those familiar with the surgery. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: While it's concerning that Gronk has had the knife trifecta on the same forearm he should be ready for training camp in July.
