2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
C.J. Spiller was a tremendous disappointment to those owners who used a first-round pick to draft him last season based on his tantalizing skill set and his coaching staff's promise to “run him until he pukes.” Due to an early season high ankle sprain, Spiller decreased his workload, but he was still effective running the ball, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Of course that was still a steep drop from his 6.0-yard-per-carry average in 2012. Spiller's numbers dropped across the board as his total yards went from 1,703 to 1,112, 8 to 2 in touchdowns and 43 to 33 in receptions. The staff has talked up an expanded role for the former Clemson Tiger once again. With his ankle now fully recovered, Fred Jackson entering the season at 33 years old and with the Bills commitment to the run, Spiller could end up as a draft-day bargain. Short-sighted owners, who are only looking at his 2012 numbers, are missing Spiller's elite-level speed, great lateral agility and a toughness that belies his smallish stature. The Bills led the NFL in rushing attempts (546) last season and should be near the top of that list once again this season. If Spiller is able to grab the lion's share of those carries a top-10 season is easily within his reach. Although he does have a $2.1MM player option for the 2015 season, he will be entering the last season of his rookie contract in 2014, so he'll be playing for his last big payday this year. Health + Motivation + Talent + Opportunity = Good Things for Spiller in 2014.

Comment: Spiller played through an ankle injury the majority of last season and still managed 4.6 ypc. He can crack the fantasy top ten at RB if he remains healthy.

Spiller to average 20 touches?
Bills less concerned about RB depth in 2014
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 14, 4:20 pm

Buffalo Bills
The bell cow in this quartet, however, is still expected to be C.J. Spiller. After spending a year working with Spiller and understanding where he really excels and how diversified his game can be, OC Nathaniel Hackett is confident he can maximize Spiller’s talents for the offense. And now with an extra pair of backs (as well as Fred Jackson) he can freely maneuver Spiller to any position on the field. If the offense is operating at peak efficiency, Spiller is likely to touch the ball 20 times a game, they just won’t all be carries out of the backfield. (BuffaloBills.com)

FFToday's Take: Hackett famously claimed that Spiller would get the ball "until he throws up" last season, so skepticism is natural. However, the additions of Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon may allow Hackett to use Spiller liberally in his up-tempo attack, especially now that his ankle is no longer an issue. It is unlikely Spiller will average 20 touches per game in such a deep backfield, but he should have no problems leading the group by a wide margin if he can stay healthy.

NFL Draft Bryce Brown adds depth to Bills backfield
Spiller and Jackson heading into contract years
By: Mike Krueger | Sun May 11, 7:00 am

Buffalo Bills
The Philadelphia Eagles traded running back Bryce Brown to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. In return for Brown, the Bills will receive a conditional 2015 fourth-round pick that can become a 2016 third-round pick. The Bills and Eagles also swapped 2014 seventh-round selections as part of the deal. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Bryce Brown gives the Bills insurance for Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller who are both entering the final year of their contracts. Jackson's age (33) means he likely won't be re-signed in Buffalo next season. Brown's fantasy value remains on hold as the third running back on the Bills depth chart.

Spiller, Jackson entering into contract years
Bills have decisions to make at RB position
By: Mike Krueger | Sun May 4, 9:00 pm

Buffalo Bills
Chief among those (issues) is the long-term future at running back, where both C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson are headed into the final year of their contracts. The Bills have performed their due diligence in looking at running backs during the pre-draft process, hosting six prospects at One Bills Drive. (Buffalo News)

FFToday's Take: Jackson (34) will almost certainly be allowed to walk at the end of this season while an attempt to keep Spiller (27) should be expected. The market for running backs is on the decline as teams are unwilling to issue big days to the position but Spiller could sign a deal similar to Chris Johnson's ($4 million per). Expect negotiations to pick up after the draft.
