The rookie quarterback will own the Indianapolis Colts huddle from day one, as was the case in 1998. The transition from iconic QB to heralded rookie has been long anticipated, and finally was given a clear path Wednesday when owner Jim Irsay and Manning ended a 14-year partnership. The byproduct likely is twofold: Luck, the overwhelming favorite to be selected No. 1 overall by the Colts in the April 26-28 draft, getting immediate on-the-job training. The team actually paying more attention to the backup position. Since Manning's arrival, the No. 2 QB often has been an afterthought.(Indianapolis Star)
FF Today's Take:Recent trends have shown that rookie quarterbacks can step in, produce and even excel during their rookie seasons. Examples include Sam Bradford, Cam Newton and Andy Dalton. Unlike the three teams that these quarterbacks played for, the Colts don't have an established running back that can carry a heavy workload. Defenses focusing primarily on the Colts' passing game might make it harder for a rookie quarterback to post the numbers we've seen in recent years.
