Mike Wallace likely to skip OTAs-- Sun May 20 7:35 pm -- Top Steeler rookies will also be unable to attend
WR Mike Wallace has not signed the one-year tender offered him as a restricted free agent, and various reports say he will not do so before the Steelers open their organized team activities. Wallace is not required to sign the tender and the only thing required of any of their players - provided they are under contract - is to attend minicamp June 12-14.
The top two draft picks, G David DeCastro and OT Mike Adams, cannot attend until the semesters end at their schools. Therefore, Adams will miss through the first week of June while DeCastro will miss all of OTAs and minicamp because Stanford's spring quarter goes through mid-June.(Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
FF Today's Take:The first "interesting" deadline is June 15, when the Steelers are permitted to change the amount of the $2.742M tender to 110 percent of Wallace's 2011 salary (roughly $577,000). Sources say they will not do that and GM Kevin Colbert has repeatedly said he wants to sign Wallace to a long-term contract. However, those negotiations have gone nowhere. The fact DeCastro and Adams - both likely starters - must miss time is unfortunate, but something they should be able to overcome.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery and offensive lineman Trai Essex. Cotchery posted the message ''Let me see ya towels'' on his Twitter account Wednesday after agreeing to a two-year deal worth around $3 million. The 29-year-old Cotchery had 16 receptions for 237 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games with Pittsburgh last season. He had a 31-yard touchdown reception during an overtime playoff loss to the Denver Broncos.(Yahoo Sports)
FF Today's Take:With Hines Ward out of the picture in Pittsburgh, Cotchery will likely battle with Emmanuel Sanders for the third receiving position behind Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown. Unless there is an injury among the top two though, don't expect Cotchery to return to his 2007 form when he caught 82 footballs for 1130 yards.
Mike Wallace to hold out for new deal-- Wed Apr 11 11:30 pm -- Steelers star WR won't sign franchise tender
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace was slapped with the franchise tag last month, so he’s not going anywhere — but according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he has no interest in signing his tender. If Wallace signed, he’d be agreeing to remain a Steeler for one year and $2.7 million; understandably, he’d much rather work out a long-term deal to earn far, far more than that. The Detroit Lions recently signed Calvin Johnson for seven years and $132 million, and the Arizona Cardinals inked Larry Fitzgerald last year for eight years and $120 million. Wallace thinks he’s in that elite class, and he might be right.(SI)
FF Today's Take:Wallace might be the fastest player in the NFL. With his world class speed, he is a big play threat every time he is on the field. He's earned a big paycheck so expect the Steelers to reward their prized receiver.
