Wells has been a big disappointment for the Cardinals since they took him in the first round of the 2009 draft, but he figures to get a chance at redemption in 2011 simply because there’s nobody left to share the load with him. After using a second-round pick on Ryan Williams, the Cardinals shipped Tim Hightower to the Redskins, only to watch Williams suffer a season-ending knee injury in the preseason. That leaves Wells as the team’s starter by default, with only LaRod Stephens-Howling around to steal touches. While Wells gets a great opportunity to solidify a starting spot this season, there is little evidence to suggest that he’s capable of being productive over a full 16 games. And that’s why you can expect the Cardinals to bring in a veteran runner as insurance. Although Wells has only missed three games in two years, he has been banged up on a consistent basis, averaging 4.1 yards per carry for his career while showing little as a receiver. Even with Hightower and Williams out of the picture, Wells rates as no better than an RB3 in 2011.
Comment:With rookie Ryan Williams (knee) out for the year, LaRod Stephens-Howling is now the backup to Beanie Wells, with Alfonso Smith (second-year out of Kentucky) #3 on the depth chart. Expect a free agent signing in the near future but Beanie Wells will likely see more carries than coach Ken Whisenhunt likely envisioned at the start of camp.
Surgery for Beanie Wells-- Tue Jan 24 3:00 pm -- Knee injury limited Wells during the season
While Beanie Wells said the day after the season he wasn’t sure he would need surgery to repair his gimpy knee, it seemed more likely than not, and this morning, the running back tweeted out what looked like a surgical announcement: "Time to go under the knife wish me luck !!! These Meds are gonna be lovely lol."
Beanie doesn’t say the procedure is for the knee, but it would seem to be a logical conclusion.
Neither coach Ken Whisenhunt or Wells ever did clarify exactly what was wrong with Wells’ right knee, but it was enough of a problem to limit him in practice ever since first getting hurt against Pittsburgh Oct. 23 and forcing Wells to play at less than 100 percent the rest of the season. Whisenhunt did acknowledge at first the fear had been torn ligaments before the team realized Wells would still be able to play. So it figures to be something less serious.(AZCardinals.com)
FF Today's Take:Wells inability to remain healthy has made him a risky pick the last two seasons and that isn't going to changed heading into the 2012 fantasy season. He'll be a borderline RB2 in fantasy drafts this summer.
Beanie Wells limited in practice-- Thu Dec 22 7:15 pm -- Cardinals RB expected to play despite sore knee
FF Today's Take:This has been the pattern with Wells over the last month or so. Don`t worry, he will start against the Bengals and is barely in the Top 20 among RBs in Week 16.
Beanie Wells limited in practice-- Thu Dec 15 8:30 pm -- Wells still dealing with knee injury but should play
FF Today's Take:There doesn't seem to be any danger of Wells missing Week 15. He has a terrific matchup against Cleveland's second worst run defense. Expect Wells to play and to post very good numbers for Fantasy Semi-Final week.
Beanie Wells limited in practice-- Thu Dec 8 7:50 pm -- Wells should play despite limited tag
FF Today's Take:Wells has been dealing with a number of ailments over the past couple of months but he has been able to suit up on most occasions - no difference here. Keep in mind that Wells is facing the league`s number 1 run defense this week so seriously temper any expectations.
