Injury Saints Lose DE Grant For Season     -- Tue Jan 5 9:30 pm --

Reinjures Triceps Muscle
New Orleans DE Charles Grant has had surgery to repair a torn triceps injury and has been placed on IR, the Saints announced Tuesday. It appears the injury occurred in the second quarter of Sunday's 23-10 season-finale loss to the Carolina Panthers. Grant suffered a similar injury last season that caused him to miss the last eight games of the season. Grant had 44 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks this season. He was the team's first-round draft pick in 2002 and has started 106 games with the Saints. (New Orleans Times-Picayune)

FF Today's Take: Just another blow to the NFC's No. 1 seed. The Saints' opportunistic defense, one of the major reasons why the team started out 13-0, has been unable to stop the run for the second half of the season and losing a starting DE isn't going to help that cause. Bobby McCray, whose strength is rushing the passer, is expected to fill in for Grant. Journeyman Paul Spicer was signed to replace Grant on the roster and may see playing time on running downs.
