2010 Outlook
Depth Chart
Outlook: Moore’s prospects got a lot less exciting due to the presence of rookie second-round pick Jimmy Clausen. Frankly speaking, Moore’s prospects weren’t that great to begin with. His role seems to be that of a caretaker quarterback in a run-based offense, and he was up to the task in 2009. In five starts, he passed for 990 yards and eight touchdowns with only one interception, averaging a healthy 16 fantasy points per game. However, that average was helped along by the eight touchdown passes, which projects to 26 on the season. You won’t find a forecast with that many touchdown passes for Moore in 2010. To sum it up, Moore’s value is that of a quarterback who plays low-risk football on a team that loves to run and has a single proven wide receiver who will miss part of training camp with a broken arm. Not to mention he’s likely keeping the seat warm for Clausen. You have better options.

Injury Steve Smith running routes with team     -- Mon Aug 16 10:55 am --

WR felt good during his first day back at practice
"Steve Smith is running routes with the starters, but not dressed in full pads. He's still in shorts. Still, it's a step." (Steve Reed; Twitter) (Steve Reed from Twitter)

FF Today's Take: The broken arm should not make you wary of having Steve Smith, but the missed practice time should. This is an indication that Matt Moore and Steve Smith are taking it upon themselves to build that chemistry. I would draft Steve Smith as if nothing ever happened in the off-season. He is injury-prone, but when healthy, reliable.
Clausen, Panthers agree to deal     -- Wed Jul 28 10:08 am --

4-yr deal worth $6.3M
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Carolina Panthers have come to terms with quarterback Jimmy Clausen on a four-year contract that includes $2.53 million in guarantees, ensuring the team will not have rookie holdouts at the start of training camp. (NFL.com)

FF Today's Take: Matt Moore is slated to be the Panthers' opening day starter so Claussen's value at the outset of the 2010 fantasy season appears to be limited.
Injury Panthers' Smith making speedy recovery     -- Fri Jul 16 12:20 pm --

Hopes to play in final preseason game
The Carolina Panthers will open training camp in two weeks without Steve Smith, but the team is hopeful that their injured wide receiver could be back for the final preseason game. Smith broke his arm last month while playing flag football, and the injury typically takes two months to fully heal. Smith is a notoriously fast healer and already is making good progress toward a return, the source said. Even if Smith isn't ready for a preseason game, the Panthers remain confident that he will be back for the Sept. 12 season opener against the New York Giants. (NFL.com)

FF Today's Take: The injury itself shouldn't affect your drafting interest in Smith, but the lack of time he's spent getting on the same page with young quarterbacks Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen should concern you.
