2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Fitzpatrick’s 2011 season mirrored that of the Bills as he started the season on a hot streak before cooling off considerably over the season’s second half. He topped 25 fantasy points in each of his first three starts, throwing for 841 yards and 9 touchdowns in wins over the Chiefs, Raiders and Patriots. From that point on, it was mostly downhill with Fitzpatrick displaying the inconsistency that has plagued his career as he finished the season with a career-high and league-leading 24 interceptions. Rewarded with a $59-million, six-year contract extension after Week 6, his production plummeted with five games under 210 yards passing over his final ten weeks – a period in which he threw for 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. While injuries to running back Fred Jackson and at the wide receiver position were part of the problem, a substantial portion of the blame goes to Fitzpatrick whose accuracy got worse as the season progressed. While his season ended badly, Fitzpatrick still finished as the 11th ranked fantasy quarterback which was generally higher than predicted. Consider him an upper tier backup once again in 2012 (the Bills threw it 58% of the time in 2011) and move him down in leagues that penalize for turnovers given his propensity for throwing interceptions.

News From The Past 90 Days
Arian Foster expected to play versus Browns     -- Tue Nov 11 9:40 am --

Groin seems okay, but Alfred Blue still a smart add
The Texans should be in good shape physically when they play at Cleveland on Sunday. Cornerback Johnathan Joseph passed the concussion protocol and will start against the Browns. “He was out there today, and he looked good,” coach Bill O’Brien said after practice. The only player the Texans know they’ll be missing is cornerback Kareem Jackson, who suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee against Philadelphia and could miss three games. “The players I mentioned last week are still day-to-day,” O’Brien said. That means running back Arian Foster, inside linebacker Brian Cushing and outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney. Foster and Cushing are expected to play. No one has any idea about Clowney, who continues to experience soreness in his knee. (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: The Texans are dealing with some important defensive injuries and have benched Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of the strong-armed Ryan Mallett, who makes his first NFL start. It's hard to say how much the Texans will use Foster in Week 11, so Alfred Blue makes an interesting flex option, and both Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins remain must-play WRs in 12-team leagues.
Texans make switch at QB, Mallett to start Week 11     -- Wed Nov 5 11:45 am --

Ryan Fitzpatrick benched
Ryan Mallett is the Texans’ new starting quarterback. Coach Bill O’Brien named Mallett the starter Wednesday, after debating during recent days whether to make a change. The first-year coach acknowledged the decision to bench veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick was "very difficult." (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: Fitzpatrick will be the backup in Week 11 with Tom Savage operating as the No. 3 quarterback. Fitzpatrick has completed 62 percent of his passes for 1960 yards, 11 TDs and 8 INTs in nine games. The Texans are 4-5 and looking for a spark. For now, consider Mallett a QB2 until he shows consistency with Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins.
Texans mulling quarterback change?     -- Mon Nov 3 2:35 pm --

HC looking for a "spark" for struggling offense
Following a 31-21 defeat to the Eagles on Sunday at NRG Stadium and another inconsistent showing from the offense, Texan HC Bill O’Brien didn’t come close to benching Ryan Fitzpatrick. But the first-year coach did say every position will be evaluated and he’s looking for a “spark” to ignite a stalled unit. O’Brien said if anyone is at fault, it’s the coach and play-caller. “If the blame is pinpointed anywhere, the blame is pinpointed here,” O’Brien said. “I’ve got to do a better job of getting these guys pointed in the right direction.” (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: O'Brien committed to Fitzpatrick as the starter early on in the offseason, but he was not signed to be the long-term answer in Houston. Ryan Mallett is waiting in the wings and could be on the verge of making his first career start sometime this season, perhaps as soon as after Houston's Week 10 bye. While he lacks Fitzpatrick's vast experience, there are no questions about his ability to throw downfield.
Texans acquire QB Ryan Mallett, release Keenum     -- Sun Aug 31 1:37 pm --

Patriots receive conditional seventh-round pick in 2016
The Texans traded for former New England quarterback Ryan Mallett on Sunday. The Patriots received a 2016 conditional seventh-round pick in return. (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: The Texans released quarterback Case Keenum after the acquisition. Mallet was taken in the third-round of the 2011 draft by the Patriots but has thrown less than 10 passes in the regular season. Malett and Tom Savage will compete for the backup quarterback job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick.
