Injury Cam Newton named Week 2 starter     -- Mon Sep 8 3:00 pm --

Sidelined for the opener with rib injury
Panthers HC Ron Rivera says Cam Newton will start the team's home opener Sunday against the Detroit Lions. Newton was held out of Carolina's win on Sunday at Tampa Bay with fractured ribs, but backup Derek Anderson stepped in and threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-14 victory. Newton is expected to return to practice Wednesday after his streak of 48 consecutive starts was snapped. Rivera says keeping Newton out against Tampa Bay was "one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make," but doctors told him it will make a huge difference in his recovery. (AP)

FF Today's Take: The key phrase here is that "doctors said it will make a huge difference in his recovery". Although it was a difficult pill to swallow for fantasy owners, it was the right move and probably something that will go a long way in making sure Newton can fully heal. Detroit and its talented front four await in Week 2, but Anderson's Week 1 showing against another tough defense was a promising development for Newton's rest-of-season prospects.
Injury Cam Newton unsure about Week 1 status     -- Thu Sep 4 3:35 pm --

Not a full-go at Thursday practice
After missing Wednesday's practice with rib soreness, Cam Newton returned to the field on Thursday but didn't throw a pass during the portion of practice open to the media. Newton later told reporters that he wasn't full-go, but remains on track to play in Sunday's regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "If I can go, I'm going to go," Newton said, "and how I'm feeling now, I'm on pace to go." Newton has never missed an NFL start, but acknowledged that he won't put his team at risk by playing before he's ready, reminding scribes: "I am human, and we all have our limits." (NFL.com)

FF Today's Take: Hardly a ringing endorsement, but it is a good sign that he took the field on Thursday. Newton is a low-end QB1 at best this week with a shaky offensive line against a potentially dominant front seven, so he has his work cut out for him. The Panthers don't kick off until 4:25 ET on Sunday, so owners may need to go in another direction this week. Derek Anderson is Newton's direct backup.
