2016 Outlook
Depth Chart
Romo put together a strong 2011 season after missing ten games in 2010 due to a broken collarbone. He topped 4,000 passing yards for the third time with 4,184 yards and threw for 31 touchdowns, the second highest total of his career. The truth is that Romo may have had the best year of his career last season as he continued to play well despite missing Miles Austin for six weeks, Jason Witten struggling somewhat down the stretch and Dez Bryant failing to register a breakout season in his second year in the league. Part of Romoís success was based on the chemistry he had with Laurent Robinson, the teamís third wide receiver who signed with Jacksonville in the offseason. Itís anybodyís guess who will attempt to replace that production in 2012 but the odds are that none of the candidates will come closing to matching Robinsonís 858 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. While Romoís statistics from last season would have been good enough to make him a top five fantasy quarterback a few years ago, he finished as the 8th ranked player at his position. There is little reason to suggest that he will improve on that ranking in 2012. Consider him a low end QB1.

News From The Past 90 Days
Paxton Lynch in mix for starting QB job     -- Fri Jan 20 9:00 am --

Broncos leaving options open at QB
With a new head coach and a new offensive staff in place in Denver, the Broncos have an opportunity to go in a new direction. According to Mike Klis of KUSA, the Broncos are prepared to give 2016 first-rounder Paxton Lynch a chance to win the starting job this offseason, and want to push him toward that goal. (ProFootballTalk)

FF Today's Take: It makes sense for the new regime as Trevor Siemian proved to be a capable but not outstanding quarterback in 2016. There's been speculation that Tony Romo would like to play in Denver but there's been no indication that the Broncos are interested in the veteran QB.
Dak, Zeke likely to play limited snaps in Week 17     -- Thu Dec 29 6:35 pm --

Sanchez, McFadden seeing bulk of reps in practice
Along with Cowboys QB Mark Sanchez receiving most of the reps, expect same with RB Darren McFadden. An inexperienced LT adds to resting starters. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FF Today's Take: The Cowboys have nothing to play for in Week 17, so exposing Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott and probably even Dez Bryant to injury doesn't make a ton of sense. The absence of LT Tyron Smith may also be contributing to their thinking as well. The only minor surprise here may be that Dallas isn't thinking about giving Tony Romo some reps, although it is understandable the team wants him healthy if it plans on trading him this offseason.
Injury Jerry Jones now hinting Dak Prescott is starter     -- Tue Nov 1 11:15 am --

Cowboys owner finally admitting rookie is ahead of Tony Romo
Jon Machota on Twitter: "Jerry Jones on what they'll do when Romo is healthy: 'You want to be very mindful of what you got going. Chemistry has to be recognized.'" (Twitter)

FF Today's Take: It makes plenty of sense to just come out and say that Dak Prescott is the starter going forward until there's a reason for a change. Tony Romo is still recovering from a serious back injury and Prescott is playing very well in his stead.
Injury Prescott to remain starter through at least Wk 9     -- Thu Oct 27 7:00 pm --

Tony Romo still working his way back from back surgery
Discussed Cowboys starting QB on our Thursday Night Football pregame show: Pencil Dak Prescott in for another start: 11/6 vs. Browns. Decision time after that. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FF Today's Take: This suggests Jerry Jones & Co. may use the next two games to see if the rookie can hold up to the pressure of playing for the starting job in the same way he has managed it during Tony Romo's absence. If Prescott impresses once again versus the Eagles this weekend, he should be a near-lock to keep the job in a favorable matchup versus Cleveland in Week 9. Continue to treat the rookie as a low-end QB1 until further notice.
