Brian Westbrook signs with Niners-- Tue Aug 17 5:40 pm -- Ex-Eagle RB not a threat to Gore's workload
Brian Westbrook so wants to be part of a winning team that he accepted a backup job across the country with the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers signed the free agent running back to a one-year deal Monday with a reported $1.25 million guaranteed, giving Westbrook the second chance he's been seeking in recent months. The St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins were other teams considering Westbrook, who ultimately said his decision wasn't all about money at this stage.
Coach Mike Singletary made things perfectly clear with his would-be player: Frank Gore is the Niners' No. 1 back. And that is unlikely to change.(Dallas Morning News)
FF Today's Take:The timing of the deal is a bit coincidental because rookie Anthony Dixon showed so well in the Niners' first preseason game. Also of note is the Cowboys' interest in Westbrook. Regardless, it's a good move by the Niners as Gore has missed at least one game in all but one of his five seasons as a pro. If Gore is forced to miss time again this season, expect Westbrook to be the pass-catching complement to Dixon in a committee situation.
Rams still interested in Westbrook-- Wed Jul 28 7:20 am -- Former Eagle remains unsigned
With no clear-cut backup for Steven Jackson at running back, the Rams remain interested in veteran Brian Westbrook, a free agent who took a physical at Rams Park in late April.(STLtoday.com)
FF Today's Take:St. Louis is likely focusing most of their attention on signing top draft choice, Sam Bradford. Westbrook is coming off a season in which concussions jeopardized his future but could become Jackson's primary handcuff by the time the season starts.
Westbrook working himself into top form-- Fri Jul 9 8:00 pm -- Veteran working out with Shiancoe, Dockett
The last we heard on the Brian Westbrook front, Steve Wyche reported that more teams than previously thought were interested in the services of the former Eagles back. Westbrook is doing his part to give every indication he's training to play in 2010. He's been working out for the last several weeks with a group of players including his brother, Byron Westbrook, Visanthe Shiancoe and Darnell Dockett at Athletic Dominance in Maryland.(NFL.com)
FF Today's Take:Westbrook's versatility as a receiving RB on screen passes make him an attractive option for teams looking for another weapon on offense. If the 30-year-old can shake last season's concussion problems, he could be modest contributor if signed this offseason.
Westbrook may have more suitors-- Thu Jun 24 10:00 pm -- "Mystery teams" may explain lengthy courtship
It was previously believed that veteran RB Brian Westbrook could play for the Broncos, Rams or Redskins this coming season. But that short list might have expanded.
NFL.com senior writer Steve Wyche said Thursday on “NFL Total Access” that “more teams” are now interested in Westbrook’s services, although those teams weren’t revealed to him. For now, those teams remain a mystery.
But that nugget from Wyche might help explain why Westbrook has been taking his time finding a new home this offseason.(NFL.com)
FF Today's Take:"Mystery teams" are often a way an agent/player rep tries to drum up more interest in his client or get a team to improve its offer. With that said, this would explain why Westbrook has yet to sign with a team. Outside of the three aformentioned teams, only the Packers and Vikings make any kind of sense for Westbrook as a third-down back for a contending team.
