Lions To Make RB Offseason Priority-- Thu Jan 28 7:00 pm -- Kevin Smith's ACL Injury Leaves Team Thin
The Lions have three running backs under contract in Kevin Smith, Maurice Morris and Aaron Brown. But GM Martin Mayhew already is on record saying, "I anticipate adding somebody to that position," either through free agency or trade or the draft.
"The question will be what their role is going to be," Mayhew said. "Is it going to be a guy you bring in and say, 'This guy is going to be our starter.' Or is it going to be a guy you bring in to supplement what you already have."
Schwartz echoed those sentiments, pointing to teams like Dallas, Jacksonville, Carolina and San Diego that have found strength in numbers in the backfield.
"I think the run game is always something that ... I don't think you're ever sort of standing pat," Schwartz said. "It doesn't mean that you don't like the guy that you have. It's just part of that position."(Detroit News)
FF Today's Take:The Lions were already likely in the market for at least a complementary RB before Smith blew out his ACL late in the season. Smith is far from a sure bet even to be ready for the start of the 2010 season. The Lions are projected to take a DT or OT with their No. 2 overall pick, but RB is a strong possibility with their second-round pick. At that spot, Detroit would be thrilled to land a potential bellcow RB such as Cal's Jahvid Best or Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer.
Kevin Smith Placed On IR-- Tue Dec 15 7:00 pm -- Extent Of Knee Injury Still Unknown
The Detroit Lions have placed running back Kevin Smith and tight end Casey FitzSimmsons on the injured reserve list, meaning both players will be lost for the season.
The move with Smith was expected because he'll soon have surgery on a torn ligament in his left knee. FitzSimmons suffered a concussion two weeks ago and missed the Ravens game.
The Lions signed free agent tight end Michael Matthews to replace FitzSimmons and they promoted Cedric Peerman from the practice squad to replace Smith at running back.(Mlive.com)
FF Today's Take:Journeyman Will Heller will step in for FitzSimmons for now, but the major fantasy focus obviously belongs on Smith. Without their starting RB, the Lions will be even more hard-pressed to mount a rushing attack and his owners will need to replace a RB2-type player in their lineup. Mo Morris and Aaron Brown are expected to step up in his absence, but with the latter currently in HC Jim Schwartz's doghouse, expect the former to carry more of the load.
RB Smith Suffers Serious Knee Injury-- Mon Dec 14 7:00 am -- Possible ACL Tear For Lions RB
Lions running back Kevin Smith knew it was bad right away. He caught a pass in the flat early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 48-3 loss to the Ravens, and as he tried to make a cut, his left knee buckled. "I just remember falling to the ground in extreme pain," Smith said. "It hurt very bad."
Smith was on crutches with a bulky brace on his left knee in the locker room. He said he would undergo testing today in Detroit, but that it didn't "feel real good." Coach Jim Schwartz said the injury looked "significant," his word for long-term.
(Detroit Free Press)
FF Today's Take:It looks like Smith's season will be over. The Lions have been sacked with injuries this year to key personnel like QB Matthew Stafford, WR Charles Johnson (WR, DL), and TE Brandon Pettigrew. Maurice Morris will likely receive more carries next in Smith's absence.
