Pats appear confident in Garoppolo-- Mon Jun 1 4:30 pm --
Perhaps best Brady backup in recent memory
Prior to organized team activities, the Patriots' coaching staff (seemed to exude confidence) that if the team has to turn to 2014 second-round pick Jimmy Garoppolo early in the season should Tom Brady's suspension not be overturned, they would still be competitive. Friday only reinforced that thought. There's obviously a long way to go (the real football starts when pads come on), but when I think of all the backups to Brady in recent memory, I'm not sure there's one who has as much promise as Garoppolo at this point.(ESPN Boston)
FF Today's Take:Even if Brady is able to knock off a game or two from his season-opening four-game suspension, this is a nugget to file away. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss points out the second-year man has been sharp in terms of receiving the play-call, getting everyone lined up properly, making checks and then delivering the ball on time and accurately. Garoppolo cannot be expected to replicate Brady's stats during his absence, but he should end up being a serviceable fill-in for however long Brady is forced to sit out.
Patriots lose two draft picks inlcuding first-rounder in 2016
The NFL announced Monday that Tom Brady has been suspended without pay for four games for violating the NFL policy on the integrity of the game. The team will also be fined $1 million and will forfeit a 2016 first-rounder and 2017 fourth-round selection in the NFL Draft. (You can read full NFL statement here.)(NFL.com)
FF Today's Take:The hammer drops. Assuming an appeal doesn't reduce the suspension, Brady will be eligible to play in Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts as the Patriots have a bye in Week 5. Jimmy Garoppolo will fill in from Brady during the first four games against Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Jacksonville and Dallas.
