2013 Outlook
Depth Chart
Considered a bit of a reach when the Vikings selected him with the 12th pick in the 2011 draft, Ponder showcased some potential after replacing Donovan McNabb in the starting lineup in Week 7 but clearly needs to work on his pocket presence and following his progressions. While he is unlikely to ever become an elite NFL quarterback, Ponder displayed some play-making ability last season both as a runner and in the passing game, despite the teamís obvious deficiencies at wide receiver. Unfortunately for Ponder, the team did little to upgrade its receiving corps for the 2012 season and running back Adrian Peterson is unlikely to be back at 100% after suffering an ACL injury late last season. When Peterson was out of the lineup, defenses clamped down on Ponder and that does not bode well for his fantasy prospects early in 2012. Given the Vikings investment in him, Ponder should be considered a safe, lower-tier option as your fantasy backup and a player with solid, but not great, prospects in dynasty leagues.

Cassel back in Minnesota     -- Fri Mar 7 8:00 pm --

QB will re-sign with Vikings
One month after opting out of his previous contract, Matt Cassel is coming back for two years and $10 million. The signing was confirmed by two NFL sources. The contract Cassel opted out of was a two-year deal he signed in 2013 that was worth $3.7 million per season. His new contract is worth $10 million over two years, according to cbssports.com. (Minneaplis Tribune)

FF Today's Take: The deal can't be completed until free agency begins on Tuesday but Cassel will be wearing purple in 2014. The Vikes are also likely to be looking for QB help in the upcoming draft but not necessarily in the first round. Christian Ponder is likely headed for a backup role.
Cassel opts out of contract     -- Sat Feb 8 9:00 am --

Vikings QB becomes a free agent
Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel officially opted out of the final year of his two-year contract today, Pro Football Talk reported, citing a league source. By exploring the free agent market, Cassel stands to get a long term contract for more money. The Vikings could still re-sign him when free agency begins March. 8. (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

FF Today's Take: Cassel signed a two-year deal prior to last season and not surprisingly, become the teams starter after Christian Ponder's inadequate play. The Vikings may re-sign Cassel as a veteran but they will likely add a young QB before the preseason begins. The Vikes have the No.8 pick in this year's draft.
Peterson happy with new OC     -- Wed Jan 29 9:30 am --

Norv Turner to help with Vikings passing game
Norv Turner has a reputation for being a pass-first offensive coordinator, but that doesn't bother the star running back he's now going to be coaching with the Minnesota Vikings. "I'll tell you, our pass offense has really struggled in the past couple years," Adrian Peterson told USA TODAY Sports in a phone interview Monday. "I think (Turner) is going to be the perfect guy to come in and get us on the right path." (USA Today)

FF Today's Take: To say that the Vikings passing game has struggled in recent years is an understatement. Moving on from Christian Ponder would be a step in the right direction. The Browns finished 11th in passing yards per game (253) under Turner in 2013.
