2015 Outlook

Sometimes the scouting reports on college players hit the nail on the head – that was certainly the case with Gabbert. The book on him coming out of college was he had the necessary athleticism to succeed but he struggled under pressure. Thrust into a starting role before he was ready, due to the release of David Garrard and Luke McCown’s ineptitude, Gabbert frequently misread plays, forced passes into coverage and threw off his back foot often when he wasn’t pressured. The Jaguars will give him every opportunity to be their starter in 2012 but they signed Chad Henne as insurance in case Gabbert continues to struggle. With Laurent Robinson, rookie 1st round pick Justin Blackmon and Mike Thomas as his lead wide receivers and Marcedes Lewis at tight end, Gabbert doesn’t possess great options in the passing game. He is waiver wire material in redraft leagues and a middling dynasty prospect.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Kaepernick placed on IR, shoulder surgery     -- Sat Nov 21 2:30 pm --

Torn labrum in his left, non-throwing shoulder
Colin Kaepernick’s season, and quite possibly his 49ers tenure, is over as he needs surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left, non-throwing shoulder, a league source said Saturday. The 49ers placed Kaepernick on injured reserve and promoted rookie Dylan Thompson from the practice squad, ahead of Sunday’s game at the Seattle Seahawks. (San Jose Mercury News)

FF Today's Take: The 49ers quarterback will likely need 4-6 months of recovery time and can be dropped from an re-draft league roster. Blaine Gabbert will be the starter moving forward. Kaeperick's $11.9 million 2016 salary becomes guaranteed if he's on the roster April 1.
Injury Carlos Hyde likely out again this week     -- Fri Nov 20 4:05 pm --

RB still recovering from a foot fracture
Before the 49ers practiced on Wednesday, coach Jim Tomsula told reporters that running back Carlos Hyde would take part after missing the team’s last two games with a stress fracture in his left foot. While you’d imagine the coach has a direct line to the team’s medical staff, Tomsula’s information proved to be incorrect. Hyde didn’t practice on Wednesday and he remained out of practice on Thursday, which makes it hard to imagine that he’ll be in the lineup against the Seahawks even if the coach were to say that Hyde will be taking handoffs from Blaine Gabbert. (NBC Sports)

FF Today's Take: In Hyde's absence, journeyman backup and practice squad member Shaun Draughn will likely see the bulk of the carries again this week, after registering 96 total yards from scrimmage in his last appearance. He's a borderline low-end RB2/flex play this week.
Injury Kaepernick not pleased with demotion     -- Fri Nov 6 9:30 pm --

Gabbert set to start for 49ers
Speaking publicly for the first time since being benched by the San Francisco 49ers, a somewhat defiant Colin Kaepernick did not agree with the team's decision to go with Blaine Gabbert as its starter, but the fifth-year quarterback said he was not going to complain. Kaepernick did, however, take issue with some of the ways he has been characterized by coach Jim Tomsula and offensive coordinator Geep Chryst. When asked if he agreed with Tomsula's assessment that Kaepernick needed to "step back and breathe," Kaepernick said, "I'm not out of breath, so I don't understand that reference." "I don't believe in pressure," he said. "Pressure is not being prepared for what you want to do. To me, I've played full seasons and had success. Mentally, I've been through it before. I'm not incapable of going through this." (ESPN)

FF Today's Take: Kaepernick can disagree with the demotion all he wants - the fact is that he just wasn't getting it done. That said, Blaine Gabbert is unlikely to be an improvement. Steer clear of all 49ers players this week for fantasy purposes.
Colin Kaepernick benched for Blaine Gabbert     -- Tue Nov 3 9:00 am --

Niners make QB switch in wake of turmoil
Bay Area Sports Guy is reporting that after falling to a record of 2-6 and bearing witness to several poor quarterbacking performances, the 49ers have decided to bench Colin Kaepernick in favor of backup Blaine Gabbert, according to a team source. (Bay Area Sports Guy)

FF Today's Take: The source first said that a big change was coming for the 49ers on Tuesday, and followed up later with confirmation that the change is going to be at the quarterback position. Gabbert will be starting for the 49ers against the Falcons on Sunday, the source said. At this point, it makes no sense to consider Gabbert for fantasy purposes, and Kaepernick can be safely dropped in redraft leagues.
