49ers release Aldon Smith following DUI arrest-- Fri Aug 7 3:25 pm --
LB unwilling to take responsibility
The San Francisco 49ers released Aldon Smith following the 25-year-old linebacker's arrest Thursday night on hit and run, driving under the influence and vandalism charges. "This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues. Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue," the team said in a statement. A team source tells ESPN's Jim Trotter that 49ers general manager Trent Baalke met with Smith after he was released from jail Friday morning, and after Smith refused to take responsibility for his latest arrest, the decision was made to release him.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Smith was a sack-machine his first two seasons in the NFL, but a series of off-field incidents have derailed his career. The 25-year-old may face another suspension, but is talented enough that another NFL team will likely give him another chance at some point. While the 49ers only registered 36 sacks last season, they led the league with 23 interceptions. This was more attributable to a strong secondary than a good pass rush. For now, the 49ers will hope that Ahmad Brooks and Aaron Lynch will put enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks, but don't expect lofty fantasy totals from this 49ers' defense.
