Outlook: Thomas flashed some playmaking ability as a rookie, but his 9.4 yards per reception average left something to be desired. He will compete with Jarett Dillard and Tiquan Underwood to start opposite Mike Sims-Walker. At just 5’8”, however, it’s possible the Jaguars will use Thomas out of the slot, which would put a serious damper on his fantasy potential for 2010. While Thomas is worth monitoring during preseason, he will likely enter the season as a waiver wire candidate, given the Jaguars weak passing attack.

Mike Thomas making a statement -- Tue Aug 10 9:45 pm --
Second-year receiver taking hold of Jags' WR2 spot | One guy who stood out in the Jaguars’ first joint practice with the Atlanta Falcons was receiver Mike Thomas. Among just the receivers, David Garrard's favorite target during this morning's practice was Thomas. He went to Thomas on three consecutive throws during team drills. Deep once, then a short pass to the right, which Thomas had to jump up to catch. The third attempt was broken up by Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes, but the message was loud and clear. "I told him during one of the periods that if he keeps making those plays I'm going to keep throwing the ball to him," Garrard said. "We are looking for someone to separate and really take that two spot. He's kind of doing it." (Florida Times Union)
FF Today's Take: In part because he scored just one time in 2009, Thomas' 48 catches went pretty much unnoticed in fantasy leagues. Mike Sims-Walker is set in as the first starter, but the potential is there for the Jags to support two fantasy WRs if only a player like Thomas can separate himself from his challengers (Troy Williamson and Jarrett Dillard) quickly. There is definite upside for PPR league owners in the 5-8, 200-pounder.
