GM: No restrictions for Cam as a runner
"You don’t hold back a thoroughbred"
By: Doug Orth | Jun 22 2015, 5:10 pm

Panthers GM Dave Gettleman, when asked if Cam Newton's extension will change how often he runs: "No. He’s got to be Cam. You don’t hold back a thoroughbred, you don’t. I don’t know if you watched the Belmont (Stakes). When (American) Pharoah came around that backstretch and that horse was nipping at his heels, the jockey let him go. He didn’t whip him. He’s just, ‘Go baby!’ And that’s what a thoroughbred does. You don’t change their game. …You can’t do it." (Charlotte Observer)

FFToday's Take: Newton was saddled with one of the worst depth charts at receiver last year and was rarely ever able to stay healthy, from his early-season rib injury to the back injury he suffered as a result of his November car accident. Once Newton got to feeling better, however, he averaged 9.5 carries for 53 yards and 0.5 rushing touchdowns over the final six games of the season (including playoffs). With his health and long-term status no longer an issue, Newton is a solid bet to finish among the top 5-8 fantasy quarterbacks this season.
