Patriots release Aaron Hernandez-- Wed Jun 26 10:55 am --
Two hours after TE was taken into custody
The Patriots released TE Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday morning, less than two hours after the player was taken into custody by state and local police in connection with the murder of Boston resident Odin Lloyd.
New England has wasted no time and is clearly doing everything it can to distance itself from Hernandez. The tight end was to count $4.073 million against New England's salary cap for 2013; it is unclear at the moment how much of that now becomes dead money. (Boston Globe)
FF Today's Take:Even if Hernandez is ultimately jailed, this is a shocking move for a number of reasons and a clear sign the team is as disappointed in him as it embarrassed. The tight end, who will be placed on waivers, was set for a huge role in the offense following the departure of Wes Welker and the uncertain nature of Rob Gronkowski. The Patriots now have a ton of question marks in the passing game, with the injury-prone Danny Amendola probably the surest thing on the roster.
