King: Broncos could target Revis -- Mon Jan 28 7:25 pm --
Denver sits $14.2 M under the cap | If the Jets choose to shop (Darrelle Revis), Denver football operations czar John Elway (could) try hard to convince owner Pat Bowlen that Revis would be the missing piece to a championship team. The Broncos are $14.2 million under the cap this morning, but that doesn't include the estimated $10 million they'd need to budget for free agent tackle Ryan Clady, who's a must-keep. That could be lower, of course, with a long-term deal for Clady. And they could save money by reworking Peyton Manning's $20 million cap number this year. (Sports Illustrated)
FF Today's Take: King mentions the Chiefs - with a ton of cap room - and the Niners - after an Alex Smith trade/release as other suitors for Revis on the trade market. The Jets do not have the option of franchising Revis if/when he voids his deal after this season, so the team has to hope the star CB buys into their long-term vision at some point or risk losing the one of the few appealing trade chips they have for next to nothing. Champ Bailey got burnt twice in Denver's playoff loss to the Ravens and the Broncos need to start thinking about his successor.
