Franchisce tag $11.4 million for Welker     -- Mon Jan 21 9:00 am --

Pats receiver set to be a free agent
Wes Welker, who received the franchise tag and a $9.5 million salary for the 2012 season, is set to become a free agent in 2013 unless the Patriots sign him to a long-term deal or tag him for a second straight season. The team has the option to use the franchise tag on Welker again this offseason, which would result in an escalated salary of $11.4 million for the 2013 season. (ESPN)

FF Today's Take: After failing to come to an agreement on a long-term deal in 2012, the Pats will have a similar decision to make on the veteran receiver in 2013. It's hard to imagine Welker in a different uniform but he will be a sought after free agent should he hit the open market.
