Ryan: starting QB job is 'wide open'     -- Tue Jan 8 12:43 pm --

Jets will weigh their option at quarterback in the offseason
Jets Coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday that the teams starting quarterback job is “wide open.” Mark Sanchez is guaranteed $8.25 million in 2013 that will make it unlikely that the Jets will be able to trade or release him. It has also been speculated that Tim Tebow will be released, which leaves Greg McElroy as the only other current Jet to compete against Sanchez for the starting job. (Rich Cimini on Twitter)

FF Today's Take: The new Jets GM will decide which direction the team will head with its starting quarterback, but it seems doubtful that the team would draft a quarterback—i.e. Matt Barkley or Geno Smith—to compete against Sanchez and McElroy; this is the worst year to draft a quarterback in recent memory. Consequently, the Jets could look toward Michael Vick, who is likely to be released by the Eagles, or another free agent quarterback. Either way, the Jets quarterback carousel looks to be a position that needs to be avoided for next year.
