Injury Alex Smith suffers Week 10 concussion     -- Sun Nov 11 10:35 pm --

Colin Kaepernick sees his first extended action
Alex Smith was removed from Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams in the second quarter with a concussion. Smith took a huge hit from Rams LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar in the back of his right shoulderat the end of a 4-yard run. He remained in the game and hit Michael Crabtree on a 14-yard touchdown pass before departing for good. Smith also sustained a concussion in the second game of the 2011 season against the Dallas Cowboys but did not come out of the game. (CSN Bay Area)

FF Today's Take: Incidently, the Niners did not report Smith's concussion last year until three days later on an injury report. Colin Kaepernick stepped in for Smith and finished 11-of-17 for 117 yards while adding 66 yards rushing and a TD on eight carries. Nicknamed "The Transformer", the second-year QB would get the start in Week 11 against Chicago on Monday Night Football if Smith cannot pass the NFL's protocol for concussion testing.
