|Kevin Smith: "Best I have ever felt" -- Mon Aug 6 6:25 pm --|
Injury-plagued RB taking first-team reps with Detroit
|At this time last year, Kevin Smith was unemployed and his phone wasn't exactly ringing off the hook. He didn't get the call until Week 8, when the Lions brought him back. Flash ahead to Monday. While Jahvid Best (concussion) and Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) continue to sit out, Smith, as he has since camp started, was taking all the reps with the first offense, looking as crisp and strong as he ever has.
"This is the best I have ever felt, body-wise and mentally," Smith said. "I just love playing football, man, what can I say. I come to work with a smile on my face every day." (Detroit News)|
FF Today's Take: Smith's injury history has been well-chronicled, but so far he is the last man standing in the Detroit backfield. Although he comes with serious red flags, Smith has fantasy RB2 upside when healthy and not forced to share touches. Since Best's progress is being measured by weeks and Leshoure will be suspended for the first two weeks of the season, Smith will almost certainly open the season as the starter in Detroit.
