Mathews creating buzz in San Diego     -- Mon May 28 1:15 am --

HC Norv Turner : "He's ready to take that next step"
Ryan Mathews is having one of those offseasons, the kind that build a buzz about a young player coming into his own, about the strong season that, in a few months’ time, could follow. With last year’s lockout, this is the first true offseason of his career. “I personally think he’s ready to take that next step,” said Turner, who also thinks Mathews has what it takes to someday lead the league in rushing. “I think he’s grown a lot in terms of understanding his responsibility when the ball is in his hand.” (San Diego Union Tribune)

FF Today's Take: Fantasy owners may remember that Mathews failed his first fitness test last summer shortly after the lockout ended - something that he doesn't appear willing to let happen again. With Mike Tolbert’s free-agency departure to Carolina, Mathews should be one of the NFL's few true feature backs this year. His offseason dedication should also help him avoid the injuries that have plagued him during his pro career so far. Mathews warrants top-five RB consideration this summer.
