Clemens Opens Jets' Camp As #1 QB     -- Thu Jul 30 7:05 pm --

HC Rex Ryan Calls Dual With Sanchez "Open Competition"
New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said Kellen Clemens will go into camp as the No. 1 QB on the depth chart, with rookie Mark Sanchez No. 2. But Ryan said it remains an "open competition." He said Clemens will get most of the first-team reps in the early going. In other news, RB Leon Washington was a no-show. He's under contract and is subject to a fine, but negotiations are ongoing and Ryan didn't sound upset or alarmed that Washington isn't here. On the other hand, RB Thomas Jones, who like Washington is unhappy with his current deal, showed up but - unlike Washington - appears to little recourse in his plight for a beefed-up contract. (New York Daily News)

FF Today's Take: Very little shocking news here. Most coaches opt to go with the veteran QB heading into camp and allow the vet to play himself out of a job or let the rookie steal it from him. Washington appears to be in line for a substantial pay raise in the $4 M range, but the 30-year-old Jones will likely be forced to play this season out at $900,000. The AFC's leading rusher from a season ago figures to see a significant drop in carries with the addition of rookie Shonn Greeene.
