Buccaneers release Doug Martin
Tampa save $6.75 million on salary cap
By: Mike Krueger | Feb 20 2018, 12:05 pm

After six up and mostly down seasons, Doug Martin's run with the Bucs is over. The two-time Pro Bowl running back was released by Tampa Bay Tuesday, a move that was expected after he failed to rush for less than 500 yards in four of the past five seasons. The decision will save the Bucs $6.75 million that Martin was scheduled to earn in 2018. Because of the structure of his contract, the team will absorb no dead money on their salary cap. FFToday's Take: The move was somewhat expected considering the savings and the zero dead money against the cap. Martin had a stellar 1402 rushing yards and 7 total touchdowns in 2015 but has only played in 19 games the last two seasons averaging 2.9 yards per carry. Peyton Barber is the leader in the clubhouse for the most work out of the backfield but don't be shocked if the Bucs address the running back position in the draft or free agency.
